Singer Esteem II 2273 Testbericht (Update 2023)

Anmerkung des Herausgebers: This Singer Esteem II 2273 Review was originally written in 2012, and has been revised and updated in 2023. We have added similar alternatives such as Janome HD1000, SÄNGER macht den Durchbruch, Und SÄNGER | M3500.

Recently, I had an opportunity to review the Singer Esteem II 2273. It’s a pleasure to share my findings with you here today. Singer Nähmaschinen have gone through several ups and downs in the more than 160 years since the first Singer hit the market.

The Singer Esteem II 2273 is, in my opinion, a signal that Singer sewing machines are once again on the way up in the Nähmaschine market.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a six inch ruler etched on the very front of the machine, just beneath the needle. The green decals, unlike others I had seen on Singer sewing machines were an eye appealing add on that sort of invited me to look further.

There are four dials… one for stitch selection, one to adjust stitch length, one for stitch width adjustment and the fourth to adjust the tension. The bobbin winder is on top of the machine and the threading guide is clearly easy to understand and follow.

What are the features on Singer Esteem II 2273?

The standard features available on the Singer Esteem II 2274 are, to put it honestly, basic. The most outstanding features are is that it is built on a heavy duty metal frame and it comes with an instructional quick start DVD.

The other features of note are:

    • 23 built in stitch options – including one automatic one step buttonhole
    • An automatic Nadeleinfädler
    • Integrierter Fadenschneider
    • A free arm, accessible by removing the on board accessories case
    • Frontladespule

Working on the Singer Esteem II 2273

Winding the bobbin and threading the Singer Esteem II 2273 are a breeze. No doubt, anyone, even a child as young as 10 or 12 would be able to accomplish these tasks with a minimum amount of supervision the very first time.

    Die Frontladespule
    Die Frontladespule

The front loading bobbin, however, could be a bit of a challenge for the novice since it is necessary to first remove the on board accessories case in order to gain access to the bobbin housing mechanism.

Graphic on the stitch selection dial

In addition, I encountered a bit of a challenge with the automatic needle threader. It took more than one attempt to get it to work as described in the instruction manual, but it did eventually work.

Identifying and selecting stitches is even easier than threading the machine. A graphic on the stitch selection dial clearly shows each stitch option.

All it takes is to simply dial up the stitch and set the desired length and width. I sampled all 23 of the available stitch options. Changing stitch options and executing them was as easy as turning the appropriate dial.

To achieve stitches indicated in blue on the dial, the stitch length dial must be turned to the ‘S1’ setting. If the user wants to adjust the sizes of the stitches, it would be necessary to make adjustments to the stitch width dial only.

The stitches themselves are acceptable. They are secure, stable and somewhat well defined, but not what I would call ‘perfect’.

There is a lever behind the needle assembly that must be engaged prior to making buttonholes. I’m not altogether certain why this is necessary. It is not addressed in the manual.

My best guess is that this feature enables the buttonholes to be sewn automatically, much the way old buttonhole makers used to function before zigzag sewing machines were commonplace in the home sewing room.

Which fabrics work on the Singer Esteem II 2273?

What are the accessories that come with Singer Esteem II 2273?

The list of standard accessories included with the Singer Esteem II 2273 is not extensive, but includes everything any home sewer would consider to be absolutely essential.

    • Four snap on Nähfüße
      • Standard/multipurpose foot
      • Knopflochfuß
      • Reißverschlussfuß
      • Knopffuß
    • Four class 15 bobbins
    • Stopfplatte
    • Nahttrenner/Fusselbürste
    • Quiltanleitung

    • Schraubendreher
    • Instructional manual
    • Schnellstartanleitung
    • Lehr-DVD

    Zubehör

NOTE: The Singer website lists an Öl dispenser bottle among the included accessories; however, for some reason unknown to me, this item was not included with the machine I reviewed.
According to the instruction manual, however, it is recommended that the race hook assembly be lubricated as needed. My best guess is that the oil dispenser was inadvertently omitted from the accessories Bausatz that was packed with this particular machine.

    Singer Esteem II 2273 Summary

    stitching samples
    Stitching samples

All of the stitches, regardless of the selection, are secure, but not as well defined as the stitches on perhaps other machines in the same category.

Having said that, I would not use this assessment as a final determining factor in choosing this machine over another sewing machine in its class or vice versa.

To conclude my review, the Singer Esteem II 2273 is slower than some other machines in its class and vibrates if you push it to sew at maximum speed. It is a little noisier than some other machines, but not such that it is an annoyance.

This sewing machine has a lot of plusses in its favor. In my opinion, the Singer Esteem II 2273 is an ideal choice for a beginner, especially one who is not altogether certain about their level of long term commitment to sewing.

The very reasonable MSRP puts the Singer Esteem II 2273 within reach of many more household budgets than many other sewing machines in the same category.

In addition, the materials packed along with the machine I reviewed included a brochure promoting the Singer Sewing Library. This is a series of about 15 books that many, including myself, consider to be the definitive encyclopedia for the home sewer.

Several years ago, I donated mine to a school. It is something that I am glad I did, but sometimes wish I’d hung onto it a little longer.

In addition to the owner’s instruction manual, the Singer Esteem II 2273 also comes with a quick start chart, which summarizes all of the key information contained in the owner’s manual as well as an instructional DVD for those who learn better by having an actual visual demonstration of the techniques being discussed in a manual.

    owner's manual
    Bedienungsanleitung

All of these components combine to make this an excellent choice for someone who has very little or no sewing experience. The Singer Esteem II 2273 is also a viable choice for the intermediate or advanced home sewer who is on the go and looking for a sewing machine that they can travel.

The downside, however, is that you would have to purchase or make a carrying case since no case or dust cover comes with the machine as a standard accessory item. I am not at all pleased with the fact that you must remove the accessories case in order to get to the bobbin housing.

True enough, the little box slides on and off very easily, but when you’re in the middle of a big sewing project, having to take this off and put it back every time you change the bobbin is in my opinion a major waste of time.

The Singer Esteem II 2273 is far from the fastest sewing machine I have worked on. When I attempted to push it to sew faster, it started to vibrate … not enough to create a problem with the task at hand, but certainly noticeable.

I find it interesting that one vital piece of information – the maximum number of stitches per minute – is not included on the product specification sheet that comes with the machine or on the website.

A slower machine, however, is a plus for a beginner. A machine that races along at 1,000 stitches per minute or more could prove to be too much for a beginner, especially a young one.

One of the things I liked best while reviewing is that the Singer Esteem II 2273 is very light, making it easy to carry to class, travel to and from college dorms or even to take on vacation. Because it is so Licht, I hesitate to recommend this machine for heavy fabrics.

Although it comes with a quilting guide, I do not think it would be a good idea to try to make a large wall hanging or quilt with this one.

However, if your sewing is limited mainly to light to medium weight fabrics, and you are in the market for an affordable, small, portable sewing machine that is good for the sewing student as well as the seasoned home sewer, then this one might be a viable option for you.

The Singer Esteem II 2273 is a basic sewing machine with 23 built-in stitches, a one-step buttonhole, a drop-in bobbin, and a free-arm. It is easy to use and has a variety of features that make it a versatile machine. However, it has a limited stitch selection and not as many features as some other machines. 1. I’m unable to use my Singer esteem 11 machine. Did not come with any bobbins , no video , no screw driver, no oil. I went and bought a pr of bobbins (metal one) which said, for all Singer Sewing machines. They were so tight in the bobbin area, and the thread kept breaking right away. Can’t return it back at Target, (I lost the recite)I do believe another customer must have bought this same machine, but returned it , and kept the items I just mentioned. I’m stuck with this machine. I have no use for it. I had a Brothers portable machine, but I gave it to a friend that was in need. It was such a good machine. I sure miss having it. No more will I waste money on a Singer machine.

      1. Elizabeth: Target will take the machine back or exchange it as long as you have kept the box, and the bar code can be linked to a credit card or other method of purchase. It has just been marked down at Target. You can also buy (or order on line) another machine, take the parts you need out of the box, and return the newly purchased one as incomplete (that’s honest — you really didn’t get the missing parts — but a little complicated. If you’s brought the machine with the missing parts in right away, that’s what Target customer service would have done) If you call Singer customer service and explain the problem, then might well send you the missing parts, too.

      2. I’m just a home sewer not associated with the Singer company,
Bobbins are very affordable and available at many stores like WalMart , Target , JoAnns etc. Try the plastic ones they are a tad smaller than the metal. oil, screwdrivers are easy to find as well as inexpensive. For less than $10 you should be able to obtain all you need. It would be a shame to let the machine go unused for so little cost.
I just bought the same machine at an auction for $7 . just the machine . with online purchase of a power cord i will have a good back up machine for less than $50.
I would still take it back to the store and tell them about the missing items. they may just give you a full replacement! worth a try.
        Happy sewing.
        A sewing friend

    2. Hi.
I recently bought this machine and I really like it. I only use it for fitting my clothes and it works fine. Just wanted to know how to lubricate it. I have no idea where to drop oil. Pls guide me. Thanks

    3. I have had the singer esteem ll 2273 for 1 year and finally got it out to sew. The second time I went to use it the needle threader seemed to seize up. Can’t get it to move at all. Also when winding the bobbin the thread does not go even, even when I assist it. So now I can’t even use the machine because it won’t go. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Read that you need to oil it, never got oil, however I do have some, but is there directions on exactly where to oil everything?
      Thank you for your help!

      1. http://youtu.be/ecdzrh0wTFo

This video was very helpful to me recently cleaning my machine. I had to watch it a few times because the woman moves quickly. Is there thread jammed up where the bobbin goes? Maybe the tension needs to be loosened a bit on the bobbin case? Do you still have the manual? I have found it to be very useful with my esteem 2.

    4. I have had this singer for 1 year and finally got it out to sew. The needle threader seemed to seize up and not it won’t sew. Also when you wind the bobbin it doesn’t do it properly even when you guide it. Need help a.s.a.p.
      thanks

    5. The reverse button on my machine has become very stiff and sticks. I’m sure it needs a good oil , but how do I get at it to oil it? Thanks for your support.

      1. Hallo Connie –

Vielen Dank für Ihren Besuch bei Sewing Insight.

Lubricating the reverse button may not be as simple as it seems. I recommend calling a sewing machine repair specialist for advice. It may be necessary for you to actually take it in for servicing in order to correct the problem.

        Viel Spaß beim Nähen

    6. I recently helped a friend adjust both the upper and lower thread tension to improve the sewing performance of her Esteem 2 2273. The machine needs oiling but there are no instructions in the manual. I followed the link above and also found nothing more than the manual. Please advise. There are a hundred youtube videos on lubricating general machines but I would like specific instructions for this particular machine.

    7. Thank you for any other fantastic post. The place else may anybody get that type of information in such
an ideal approach of writing? I’ve a presentation subsequent week,
and I am at the look for such info.

    8. I have this machine, but have yet to use it. I am very new to sewing. I’m interested in quilting. Are you thinking that the machine will not be able to sew through thick enough material to quilt, or are you more concerned with the slow stitching speed for quilting, or both?

      1. Addendum to my first comment:
I’m basically wondering is quilting possible on this machine, and just would be a slower process, or is it impossible?

    9. I was given this machine for my birthday a few years ago. I noticed that everytime I use it the bottom threads are very loose. I have rethreaded, checked upper and lower tensions, matched threads. I did notice that the bobbin dies not thread evenly and the upper thread jumps off the lower guide. Something is missing. My so has the same machine and same issue. We gave up he upgraded to the Heavy duty and I went back to the peddle machine.

    10. Hallo, I have a problem with my singer esteem ll, I only used it once and now it doesn’t want to sew the machine comes on but it doesn’t sew when I try to toern the round wheel bei hand it stuckes it doesn’t want to toern, can someone tell me how I can get it to toern and sewing again thank you Elisabeth
