Juki MO-1000 Serger Review (2023 update)
Note from Editor: This Juki MO-1000 Serger review was originally written in 2014. We have reviewed and revised it in 2023 to update the features and provide alternatives such as the Juki MO644D, Janome MyLock 634D and the Singer Making the Cut Serger, to this great serger.
On my very first visit to Stuart Sew and Vac, I had the pleasure of reviewing the Juki MO1000 Easy Threader. This 2, 3, 4 thread/1, 2 needle serger is possibly the most user friendly serger for home use that I have had an opportunity to review thus far.
Juki MO-1000 Serger Overview
Juki MO-1000 Product features
To look at it, the Juki MO 1000 Easy Threader looks like any other serger developed for use in the home. When you open the looper cover, however, it’s altogether different. Rather than the thread maze that we have become accustomed to when looking inside the cover, there are two holes for inserting thread, a switch to turn the air on and off and a color coded threading chart that describes the threading process in words and pictures. Essential serging supplies, including a lint brush and screwdriver are also stored inside the looper cover. The key features on this machine are:
- Automatic needle threader
- Adjustable differential feed
- Upper looper 2/3 thread converter
- Large throat area
- Up to 8 mm presser foot lift
- Retractable blade
- Automatic rolled hem
- Adjustable presser foot pressure
- Cut with adjusting dial
- Finger guard
- Thread trimmer

Working on the Juki MO-1000

Threading the Juki MO1000 Easy Threader is just what the name implies… easy. I couldn’t believe how simple the process was. All that’s required is to insert about 9-12 inches of thread into the corresponding opening and press the ‘air’ button.
The lower looper threads are sent through the looper and in an instant, they are ready to go. Threading the upper loopers is just as simple. Just follow the guides and the automatic needle threader does the rest. Retracting the blade is as easy as flipping a lever inside the looper cover. Changing the machine settings from 4 threads to 2 or 3 threads is just as simple. Just turn the dial and you’re all set.
The differential feed and stitch length controls are on the right side of the Juki MO 1000 Easy Threader, making it easy for you to swiftly change the stitch length or get perfect curves without stopping your work. The Juki MO Easy Threader can produce seven different stitches:
- 2, 3, or 4 thread overlock
- 3 thread narrow overlock
- 3 thread flatlock
- 3 thread rolled hem
- Frilled 3 thread rolled hem – using differential feed
For this review, I sampled the 4 thread overlock stitch. The stitches are tight, well formed and secure. One serger trick is to pull on both sides of overlock stitches to achieve a ladder stitch. While I was able to accomplish this technique, it took a bit more effort than required when working with some other sergers.

Alternative Sergers
The Juki MO644D, Janome MyLock 634D and the Singer Making the Cut Serger are great beginner friendly alternatives to the Janome MO-1000
Juki MO644D is a 2/3/4 thread serger with auto-rolled hem and a color coded threading breakaway looper adjustment for stitch length and differential feed. It does not sew very heavy fabrics but can work with lightweight and medium weighing fabrics really well. Stitching speed rides up to a good 1500SPM and working with this is rather easy. This device is really quiet while working on fabrics is very smooth. It is a really good device for beginners and people who dont do heavy sewing.

Both beginners and professionals will love this sturdy, basic serger. The structure is strong enough to last for years, and the stitches are always even and smooth. The 634D is a flexible serger, but it is expensive because almost all of its parts can be changed. The Janome MyLock 634D serger includes a narrow hem stitch, a picot edge stitch, a 2-thread rolled hem stitch, 3- or 4-thread overlock stitches, and 3- or 4-thread overedge stitches. Additionally, it has an adjustable differential feed with a ratio range of.05 to 2.25. The advanced lay-in threading technology and detailed color-coded instructions for threading inside the front looper door make threading quick and easy. The Janome MyLock 634D supports 2, 3, and 4-thread overlocking stitches for maximum versatility in creating professional garments.

Summary: Juki MO-1000

When the folks at Juki decided to expand their line of sewing machines and sergers for the home, they did not skimp on the really important things – the things that made Juki one of the most respected names in industrial sewing machines. The Juki MO 1000 Easy Threader is not only a sturdy machine, it is also quiet and there is absolutely no vibration whatsoever. So many people get frustrated with sergers because traditionally they had been so difficult to thread properly.
The threading process on the Juki MO 1000 Easy Threader makes this an ideal serger for beginners. After all, the most challenging thing about working with a serger was getting it threaded and this machine has removed that roadblock. The quality of the stitches, the ease with which the machine is set up, and the safety features are added benefits for the beginner as well as for the seasoned home sewer.
I know several people who have been sewing for decades and have given up on using their older sergers simply because they have grown weary of all the work involved in the threading process. No doubt, once they find out how simple it is to thread the Juki MO 1000 Easy Threader, they may reconsider their decision to move forward without having a serger in their sewing rooms.

As I stated above, this is one serger that I feel comfortable recommending for use by beginners. Because of the blade, however, I am not certain that this would be a good choice for very young children – younger than 10 years of age. I definitely recommend the Juki MO 1000 Easy Threader for children beyond elementary school age, teens, young adults and seniors who like to sew and are in the market for a new serger.
With seven different stitch options, smooth and quiet operation, the Juki MO 1000 Easy Threader is an excellent choice, especially if you intend to use it for many, many years to come.
This is one of the most reliable sewing machine brands in the world. The good news is Juki hasn’t sacrificed any of the quality or technological superiority that the Juki brand name was built on in the process.

When Juki decide to change its motto to “Juki is coming home”, the people in the Juki advertising department knew exactly what they were doing. Juki DDL 8100e Industrial Machine Review
It’s not often that I come across a sewing machine that is so fast it makes me want to take a step back. That’s what happened when I reviewed the Juki DDL 8100e straight stitch only industrial sewing machine. This is quite probably the fastest sewing machine I have ever worked on. At more than 5000 stitches per minute, I know it’s the fastest sewing machine I have ever reviewed.

Juki HZL Exceed HZL Series Review 300, 400, 600 (2023 update)
When I reviewed the Juki HLZ Exceed series (300, 400 and 600), I was impressed by the simplicity of the machines in this line. The only difference between these three computerized machines is the number of available stitch options. All of three machines in the HLZ Exceed series offer a knee lift; a monochromatic backlit LCD display screen; an oversized workspace and sew up to 900 stitches per minute.

Juki HZL Exceed F600 Quilt & Pro Special Review (2023 update)
I wrote a review of the Juki HZL Exceed series a little while ago. Recently, I had a chance to do a hands-on examination of the F600 Quilt & Pro Special, the top of the Juki Exceed line. This machine is truly one to be seen and experienced in order to be fully appreciated. It is solidly built, produces excellent stitches, doesn’t vibrate and is whisper quiet. Anyone looking for a new sewing and quilting machine owes it to themselves to take a very close look at this one before making a final decision as to which machine to add to their sewing room.

Juki MO 644D Review (2023 update)
The Juki MO 644D is possibly the most dependable, reliable serger in its price range. It is affordable and easy to use. Its features include a differential feed and adjustable stitch length and width controls as well as adjustable presser foot adjustment. While these features are available on every new serger, they stand out on the MO 644D because of its excellent stitch quality. There is no free arm, but that is a very minor inconvenience when you take into account the quality of the stitches and the great way it sews through all types and thicknesses of fabric.

Happy Stitching.
Thanks for all your reviews! Because of your hard work of checking all the different brands, I purchased this Juki and am so happy!
did you check the enlighten? why did you choose juki, I am between the two and if I need the wave stitch or now? love to hear how you decided. thanks, judy
I have the MO-2000. I chose it because it is more sturdy, doesn’t scoot as easily as the babylocks. I like the control of the tension, not a fan of auto-tension at all. I like having all my settings right on the screen for me. Its a real solid machine
It is a great machine but I noticed it doesn’t have a seam allowance guide
Can anyone tell me the history of maintenance on the Juki MO 1000 model.? Also when did it arrive on the market? How often does Juki up date its models. I would not like to invest in one and then have a new model come out.
