Brother PQ1500SL Sewing and Quilting Machine
In 2015, Brother launched a high-speed straight-stitch sewing machine called the PQ1500SL. The PQ1500SL is not an industrial machine, but has been given the look of one. You will not be finding a table and servo motor as you would with industrial machines. The PQ1500SL was designed to be the closest you can get to an industrial sewing machine in the domestic sewing machine market.
To cut to the chase, the Brother PQ1500SL is an absolute dream to sew on. If you are a serious quilter, this is going to be your thing. The performance and output quality are nothing short of what you would get on an industrial machine, which is likely to cost you more. The PQ1500SL is a fairly recent launch and quite popular among quilters, and that sounded like a good reason for us to do a detailed review on it today.

- The four locations of the feed dogs on this machine correspond to the thread tension dial. Blue is for light-weight fabrics, green is for medium-weight to heavy-weight fabrics, the black feed aids in free-motion quilting, and red is for the pin-feeding system.
- It has a strong motor, which contributes to its remarkable sewing speed per minute.
- This sewing machine’s transparent cover allows you to see when the bobbin is going to run out of thread because it has a top drop-in bobbin. Because of its reputation for being jam-proof, this type of bobbin ensures a comfortable stitching experience.

- The automatic needle threader that comes with this machine allows you to easily and quickly thread the needle with no effort at all.
- The automated thread cutter is another feature you’ll appreciate. To use the automated thread cutter on this machine, all you need to do is have your needle up and the presser foot down instead of manually cutting the thread with scissors.
- The extended table for this machine is 12″ by 18″. With the extension table, you have an extended, unhindered view of the fabric. As a result, you have complete control over the fabric and sewing.
- According to the sewing project and the cloth being used, the presser foot’s height can be changed.
- When it comes time to free motion quilt, your sewing machine should make it easy for you to do so. This model’s throat is large enough and has enough room for you to easily roll the quilt and begin free motion quilting in the center.
- Because the feed dog and feed pin are perfectly synchronized, the fabric layers are fed uniformly, making it very simple to quilt or sew a fabric with extraordinary thickness or numerous layers of fabric.

Fabrics that can be used with the Brother PQ1500SL
A modest selection of fabrics, including sheer textiles, stretch knit, elastic, flexible poplin, cotton, canvas, denim, have all been test-sewed. We’ve found that the machine works wonderfully with most fabric types.
- The Brother PQ1500SL is known for its impressive sewing speed of up to 1500 stitches per minute.
- Its high-powered motor allows it to effortlessly handle thick fabrics and multiple layers.
- Comes with a large workspace and extension table.
- The machine lacks the versatility of other sewing machines that offer a wide range of stitches and decorative options.
- Due to its powerful motor and high sewing speed, the Brother PQ1500SL can be quite loud during operation.
Working on the Brother PQ1500SL
Setting up the Brother PQ1500SL might take a little bit, which is to be expected with sewing machines of this kind. The machine weighs a 25 pounds, which is by no means portable. However, it will remain steady and stable when you use the highest sewing speed. At 1500SPM, the sewing speed on this machine is rather marvellous, maybe a tad bit overwhelming when you use it for the first time.
The Brother PQ1500SL is not for a beginner. You will have to be well acquainted with the nuances of quilting machines to be able to use it. Except for that, the features are perfectly convenient. The needle is always in the down position, which lets you turn your fabrics easily. There is more than ample room for your quilt sandwich. It also helps that this machine has been built to accommodate almost any and every fabric that you would need to sew. You name it and the machine will sew through it. There is also no compromise on stitch quality. Each single stitch that comes out of this machine is smooth, precise, and clean.
One of our favorite parts of the review process was the ease we had with free motion quilting. The speed keeps up well. Throat space is adequately wide, and the stitch quality is very neat and precise. Free motion quilting is pleasantly easy on the Brother PQ1500SL. If you have used quilting machines from earlier years where it wasn’t easy, this is going to be a welcome surprise for you. However, in that case there are also a few downsides waiting.
A loaded bobbin was a welcome surprise that was included. Recently, we’ve tested a few new machines; however, none of them came pre-loaded with bobbins. We found this to be exciting. Also, pre-wound bobbins are advised for use with this machine. The bobbin mechanism on this, however, is counter intuitive if you are accustomed to the good old basic race and bobbin case. Accessing the bobbin is a little difficult, especially if you have large hands. The flap that makes way to the bobbin is tiny and will not accommodate anything bigger than a slender hand. You might want to not hold the lever while putting the bobbin in, but pull it after inserting the bobbin in the holder. To my disappointment, the bobbin is actually designed to hold more thread than it does. You also can not see the bobbin while sewing, so there is no way to know when the thread is about to run out.
The thread cutter on this machine has the unfortunate effect of cutting the thread so short that it escapes the needle, requiring further threading. While it is actually necessary to put the thread through two of the three holes in the thread guide, you can avoid this by using only one of the three holes. The needle threader is a little troublesome and is likely to take some time and getting used to. The tension discs are on the outside, which makes it a little unique compared to other sewing machines. There are instructions on how to figure the needle threader out. We recommend keeping the guide handy because there is a good chance that you might need it even several months into using this machine.
The bobbin and needle threader are the only to complaints we have with this model. Everything else is a breeze. If you can work your way around the threading and bobbin size, this machine is as good as it gets for a serious quilter who is looking for a straightforward product which is value for money. The Brother PQ1500SL works just like an industrial sewing machine, but is surprisingly much quieter, which was our final favorite thing about the Brother PQ1500SL. If you have used the likes of Pfaff Quilt Ambition, Juki HZL Exceed 600, etc., you will find the Brother PQ1500SL extremely useful.

Concluding Our Review
The Brother PQ1500SL is a heavy-duty sewing machine that is designed for quilting. It is not for beginners, but it is a great option for experienced quilters who are looking for a machine that can handle thick fabrics and produce high-quality stitches. It has a few downs but we believe those can be worked through and do not create any extremely serious stumbles while working on the machine. The stitch quality is excellent and the machine is overall a quite workhorse that will take you a long way.

About the Brother Company
Brother Industries was founded in 1908 in Nagoya, Japan, as Yasui Sewing Machine Co. by Kanekichi Yasui. The company initially provided repair services and parts for sewing machines, but in 1928, Masayoshi Yasui, Kanekichi’s son, and Jitsuichi Yasui, Masayoshi’s younger brother, founded Yasui Brothers’ Sewing Machine Co. and began manufacturing their own sewing machines.
The company’s first product was a chain stitch sewing machine capable of producing straw hats. The machine was popular for its durability compared to German machines at the time. In 1932, the company introduced and began mass production of home sewing machines, when Jitsuichi Yasui succeeded in developing shuttle hooks.
After World War II, Brother began expanding its product line to include typewriters, calculators, and other office equipment. In 1962, the company changed its name to Brother Industries, Ltd., and in 1964, it provided 300 typewriters for journalists from abroad at the Tokyo Olympic Games. This helped to greatly improve global recognition of the Brother brand.
In the 1970s, Brother began to expand its international operations, opening sales and manufacturing facilities in Europe, North America, and Asia. The company also began to develop new technologies, such as inkjet printers and digital copiers.
Today, Brother is a global leader in the manufacture of sewing machines, typewriters, printers, and other office equipment. The company has over 100,000 employees worldwide and operates in over 200 countries and regions.
