Seiko 8BLD-3 recensie (update 2023)
Opmerking van de redactie: This Seiko 8BLD-3 Review was originally written in 2013, amd has been revised and updated in 2023. We have added alternative straight stitch industrial sewing machines such as Juki DDL-8700, Janome 1600P-QC, En Juki Haruka TL18QVP.
Seiko is not a brand that you come across often while browsing sewing machines online. Their online availability is quite limited, but you are sure to find some lovely vintage models on eBay. When I spotted a Seiko 8BLD-3, I couldn’t resist the temptation to use it and below you can see my review.
Seiko 8BLD-3 Overview
Seiko 8BLD-3 is a heavy-duty straight stitch industrial sewing machine that was built to primarily work with thicker materials such as denim, upholstery, leather, suede, etc. It has an all-metal construction with a sturdy finish, which makes it extremely durable. It features an aside-mounted bobbin winder, a safety clutch, a free arm, a knee lift, etc, It does not have as many automatic features as modern-day industrial sewing machines, but it delivers exceptional output consistently, even with time. Regular maintenance of this device will definitely make it last a long time.
What caught my eye when I first saw the Seiko 8BLD-3 was the clean lines and the all metal construction. The entire machine head is made of metal.

On a new naaimachine, an all metal head is a dead giveaway that it is built for commercial or industrial.

Machines made for home use generally have plastic or some sort of synthetic material on the outside, even if the chassis is metal. Since I learned on and still use all metal sewing machines in my home, I was immediately drawn to this one. In addition to the all-metal construction, the Seiko 8BLD-3 is able to be mounted with a dual thread cone stand, bobbin winder, and lamp attached.
What are the features on Seiko 8BLD-3?
When it comes to industrial sewing machines, you will never find the kinds of features that are available on many computerized sewing machines designed for home use.
Industrial sewing machines, especially straight stitch machines such as the Seiko 8BLD-3, offer only the very basic features necessary for the machine to operate at top speeds with maximum efficiency.
The Seiko 8BLD-3 offers the following standard features:
- Lopende voet
- Safety clutch
- Side mounted bobbin winder
- Knie lift
Working on the Seiko 8BLD-3
Although an uncomplicated process, threading the Seiko 8BLD-3 is significantly different from threading many of the newer sewing machines. The threading process is slightly reminiscent of threading vintage Singers.

There is a separate bobbin winder on the side of the machine, enabling the user to wind several bobbins while sewing. This feature is actually available many industrial sewing machines.

The knee lift raises the presser foot high enough for very thick leather or canvas to pass through with ease, and there is an extra large foot pedal at the bottom, which is standard on every single tafel mounted industrial sewing machine I have ever seen.

I hesitate to say that this is a feature that is on all table-mounted industrial machines, but I feel safe in saying that you will find an extra-large foot pedal on most sewing machines of this type.
Adjusting the stitch length was very easy. All it took was an adjustment of the dial on the front of the machine. The reverse stitch lever is located directly beneath the stitch length adjustment dial. This particular model is equipped with an electronic motor, which is not only an energy saver, but also far quieter than a clutch motor.
I prefer electronic motors on industrial machines of this type because they not only conserve energy they are completely silent until you engage the foot pedal. With a clutch motor, you hear a constant whirring sound the entire time the machine is turned on. When the foot pedal is engaged, the Seiko 8BLD-3 runs smoothly and with very little noise. Regardless of the length, the stitches are neat, well defined, and uniform.
For this review, I used a piece of heavy denim. Just to see if there was any difference in the stitch quality or ease of stitching, I used double and quadruple thicknesses.

I am pleased to report that there was absolutely no difference whatsoever. This tells me that when you attempt to sew very thick leather or suede on the Seiko 8BLD-3, the results will be comparable.
What are some alternatives for Seiko 8BLD-3?
The Seiko 8BLD-3 is one of many heavy-duty sewing machines that we have reviewed so far, and here are some alternatives we highly recommend.
Juki TL18QVP is a well-known straight-stitch sewing machine. It is semi-industrial in style and features, drawing inspiration from industrial Juki sewing machines. It has several fantastic features that will make stitching a breeze, as well as essential extras like a knee raise lever and a huge extension table.
It has a superb "Float Function," which eliminates uneven stitching on quilts and velvet, as well as stretched threads on knit textiles. It allows the presser foot to float between 0 and 2mm above the material, which makes it excellent for sewing over thick seams.

Stoffen die werken | Stoffen die niet werken |
---|---|
Natuurlijke vezels/katoen-linnen-wol Bond Reptielen huid Canvas/keperstof Kunststof/rubber Gebreide stoffen (alleen middelzwaar tot zwaar) Bekleding Extra dikke stoffen of meerdere lagen Leer | Fijne stoffen/zijde-satijn-taft/fluweel Synthetische stoffen/mix-rayon-polyester |
What are the accessories that come with Seiko 8BLD-3?
If you think the features are bare bones, the accessories are even more so. The Seiko 8BDL-3 offers only the most essential of accessories:
- Owners’ manual
- Extra spoeltjes
- Extra naalden
The primary reason you will not find extra accessories such as lint brushes, seam rippers, and a bunch of extra naaivoeten is easy to understand. First of all, this is an industriële machine. Therefore, it is generally accepted that the user will already have lint brushes, screwdrivers, seam rippers, etc. In addition, the Seiko 8BLD-3 is a straight stitch only machine.
Therefore, an abundance of presser feet is not necessary. In addition, the built in walking foot is designed to work with extra-heavy fabrics and thicknesses.

About Seiko Sewing Machines
Seiko, which originated in Japan, goes back quite a few centuries. In 1881, they started out as a watchmaking company and became a popular name in Japanese households. In 1946, they started manufacturing household sewing machines that were easy to use and offered great output in terms of stitches. Seiko was heavily focused on stitch quality, as was the demand of the public.
Through the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, Seiko continued to innovate and introduced electronic sewing machines that incorporated advanced features such as programmable stitches, automatic thread tension, and built-in stitch patterns. These machines revolutionized the sewing industry by offering increased functionality and ease of use.
In 1990s-2000s, Seiko further enhanced its sewing machines by integrating computerized technology. Computer-controlled models were introduced, offering a wide range of stitch options, decorative patterns, and digitized embroidery capabilities. These machines provided more creative possibilities for sewers and expanded the scope of their projects.
In recent years, Seiko has continued to refine and expand its product lineup. They have focused on developing specialized machines for specific applications, such as industrial-grade machines for heavy-duty sewing tasks and automated systems for high-volume production environments.
Seiko sewing machines have gained a reputation for their durability, precision, and high-performance in various industries, including garment manufacturing, automotive upholstery, leatherworking, and more. Their commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction has made them a trusted brand among sewers and manufacturers worldwide.
Summary: Seiko 8BLD-3 review
A machine like this is not for the fainthearted. The Seiko 8BLD-3 is a single purpose industrial sewing machine that is not designed with beginners in mind.
Although I believe that a person with intermediate sewing skills could operate this machine, I feel compelled to add that even a person who has been sewing for a few years might be intimidated by a machine that sews this fast.
A home sewer with advanced skills might even be intimidated by the speed of this one. Any sewing machine that can sew up to 2400 stitches per minute deserves an operator who can handle the power and not be intimidated by it.
The Seiko 8BLD-3 is, in my opinion, an excellent machine for making tents, handbags, and any seriously heavy duty job. Although some industrial sewing machines are good for home use, I do not believe that this is one.
It belongs in a factory, a shoe repair shop or someplace where specialty bags are produced. To use it for anything less would be a waste of this excellent resource.

I just bought a Seiko STH 8BLD. I should have taken lessons in the shop but it is a couple of hours away from me. I’m not sure I have it threaded properly. It picks up the bobbin thread fine and pulls through well until I lower the pressure foot. The thread tightens and breaks when I start to sew. I am a quilter and experienced sewer but this does move very fast. Thanks for any help you can give me.
