I took a drive one day from my home in South Florida to Jensen Beach in Martin County – approximately 70 miles each way – to visit a sewing machine dealer I had heard a lot of good things about. The trip was well worth it.

On my very first visit to Stuart Sew and Vac in Jensen Beach, Florida, I discovered a veritable gold mine of Janome and Juki home sewing machines and sergers that I had only read about, but couldn’t get my hands on to review.

Randy Schleter, proudly points out that the sewing machine business is part of his DNA. His father supported the family by running a sewing and vacuum business of his own in Ft. Lauderdale when Randy was a child.

He learned the business inside out from his dad. So, when Randy was ready to step out on his own, the logical conclusion was that he open this own sewing machine and vacuum business. Stuart Sew and Vac opened its doors in October 2009.

Everyone knows the business mantra “location – location – location”. As it turned out, Stuart Sew and Vac’s first home was not the ideal location for a business of this type.

The original Stuart Sew and Vac was located inside an industrial park where nobody could find it unless they were really looking for it.

After struggling in obscurity for three years, Stuart Sew and Vac moved from Stuart to a very busy intersection in nearby Jensen Beach.

According to Randy, the move was definitely a good one because almost instantly, the number of people who came into the shop increased tremendously.

No longer were they tucked away in an industrial park where nobody could fin them. All of a sudden, Stuart Sew and Vac was visible to the world… in a busy shopping plaza at the intersection of Federal Highway and Jensen Beach Boulevard.

With the move, people were able to easily find all the great things offered at Stuart Sew and Vac without any effort at all. In addition to Juki and Janome sewing machines and sergers, they are also an authorized Consew dealer.

The spacious store is quite welcoming – in some ways I must say more than some of the other sewing machine shops I have visited. It is quite obvious that growing up in the sew and vac business was a huge benefit to Randy.

When you enter Stuart Sew and Vac, your very first impression is that is a place where a person who really knows their sewing machines will be able to get good service from people who not only know their sewing machines, but know how to work with people who sew as well as those who don’t.

    Q. Is Janome a reliable sewing machine brand?

Ans. Many seasoned crafters and seamstresses use Janome sewing machines because of their reputation for dependability and quality. Janome is a fantastic choice if you’re searching for a high-quality sewing machine.

    Q. Which is the best Janome machine for thick textiles?

Ans. The Janome 4120QDC is an excellent sewing machine for the typical home quilter and seamstress. It can frequently handle tougher textiles and yet endure for years because of its durable, heavy-duty aluminum construction and robust, snap-on cover.

During my visit, I observed Randy and his staff – which, by the way are his wife and their two sons, Kyle and Ryan – communicate with customers in person and on the telephone. They are not only courteous, but professional and go out of the way to be extra helpful.

There is also a large assortment of sewing notions, including high quality irons, books and machine embroidery and quilting supplies and notions. Stuart Sew and Vac is also an authorized Horne Cabinetry distributor.

I was pleased to learn that Horne recently moved its entire operation back to the United States from Canada… a great advantage for the company as well as the client who wants to redesign their sewing room with the assurance that any support they may need is readily available right here in the USA.

Popular for Saturday classes for children, a sewing club, and new owner’s classes

Among the services provided by Stuart Sew and Vac one of the most popular is the class schedule that includes Saturday classes for children, a sewing club, and new owner’s classes. The children’s classes are free of charge.

Randy’s wife, Dolly, gathers materials and teaches children of all ages how to construct basic items like tote bags. The students use kits to assemble their bags from the fabrics gathered by Dolly, Randy’s wife.

There is also a repair shop in the rear of Stuart Sew and Vac where sewing machines and sergers of all types and all brands are serviced, cleaned and repaired.

I saw a couple of vintage Singer Featherweights which had been brought in for repair as well as relative new machines that were brought in for regularly scheduled cleaning and servicing.

Certainly every community needs a reliable sewing and vacuum dealer where the staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
