Simplicity SB 700T Review (2023 Update)
Note from the Editor: This Simplicity SB 700T review was originally written in 2013, and has been revised and updated in 2023. We have added alternatives such as Brother CS5055, Janome 3160QDC, and Brother CP60X.
I was recently introduced to the Simplicity line of sewing machines at Laura’s Sewing and Vacuum in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida… just a little bit north of West Palm Beach. Laura explained that Brother had recently acquired the entire Simplicity sewing machine line and was offering them at rates to compete with the big retailers that sell low end sewing machines.
The difference, however, is the Simplicity line is of a much better quality than the machines you might find at Walmart, Sears and Target. In addition, you can’t get a demonstration at those large retailers that don’t specialize in sewing machines. This is definitely not the case with the Simplicity line. Simplicity sewing machines are available only through authorized Brother Innovis dealers.
One other great feature about the sewing machines in the Simplicity line is that you get a free Simplicity pattern with the purchase of certain models. In the case of the SB 700T, a free wedding gown pattern is included in every carton. If you are not planning to make a wedding gown, you can always use the pattern to make a special occasion dress in another color.
Simplicity SB 700T Overview
Simplicity SB 700T is a sewing and quilting machine by Brother that packs 70 onbuilt stitches, 7 one step buttonholes, variable speed control slider, start stop buttons, and precise LED lighting that covers the work area well. The device is also aided with onboard thread cutters, a free arm, and reverse stitch. The monochromatic LCD screen is integrated with a user friendly UI for the user’s ease.
The first thing I noticed on the Simplicity SB 700T was not the Simplicity brand name, but Brother. Perhaps this is a signal that eventually the Simplicity name will be phased out.
Maybe it’s just a way of letting consumers know that Simplicity sewing machines come with the same standards of quality that they have become accustomed to with Brother sewing machines.
The Simplicity SB 700T has very attractive fuchsia accents and a numbered stitch selection guide right on front along with a monochromatic LCD screen, variable speed slider, and function buttons to control the needle up or down position, start/stop button, and a reverse stitch button.
In addition to all that, the Simplicity SB 700T comes with easy to follow decals displaying bobbin winding and threading processes as well as the location of the on board accessories.
Seam guides are etched onto the needle plate. A decal shows you how to insert the bobbin correctly and the see through bobbin cover makes it easy to determine when the bobbin needs to be replaced.

Working on the Simplicity SB 700T
The on board decals make winding the bobbin and threading the Simplicity SB 700T are a cinch… easily mastered by someone who has never touched a sewing machine before.
Once the machine was threaded and the bobbin put into place, selecting the stitches was equally as simple. Stitch numbers appear just above each stitch on the selection guide.
Switches on the bottom of the LCD screen were used to select the desired stitches while the switches to the right of the screen are used to adjust stitch length and width.
I honestly wasn’t certain what to expect when it came to stitch quality. I am very, very pleased to share with you that the stitch quality is superlative.
The Simplicity SB 700T has a very comfortable work space. The on board accessories compartment can be removed to reveal a convenient free arm and to accommodate larger sewing tasks, an extension table is included as a standard accessory to make working on coats and other large projects even easier.

Simplicity SB 700T Summary
To conclude this review, the Simplicity SB 700T is a surprisingly user friendly sewing machine that is not only lightweight, but affordable as well. With an MSRP of only $199, almost any household can now be assured of having access to superior quality sewing at home.
This sewing machine is not only a good learning tool for children and adults alike, it is also great for the home sewer who has years and years of experience. It is great for making clothes, accessories and home décor accent pieces. I hesitate to recommend it for a lot of heavy duty use. It is, after all, a small, lightweight sewing machine with a drop in bobbin.
While they are very convenient, machines with drop in bobbins are not generally good for working with very heavy fabrics because the bobbin tension can only be adjusted by a sewing machine repair professional. With a machine this economically priced, I am not certain this is even possible. With that in mind, I highly recommend the Simplicity SB 700T for general home use by sewers of all ages and skill levels.
Not only is it user friendly, lightweight and affordable, I don’t believe the stitch quality cannot be beat by any other computerized sewing machine in its price range.

Vernelle,
I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your reviews. I am a 40+ year Pfaff user but want a lightweight machine to haul to classes and to a charity sewing group to which I belong. I was trying to compare many machines and stumbled upon your site. I promptly looked for your reviews for all the machines I was considering and really appreciate the information presented. I decided on the above Brother machine (also recommended by my sewing machine store). Keep up the good work.
Thanks for your review! I am new to sewing and your thorough reviews helped me make an informed decision. I was able to buy a used Simplicity 700T and have been enjoying creating wonderful projects.
