Juki TL 2010Q Review (2023 update)
Note from Editor: The Juki TL 2010Q Review was originally written in 2014. It has been reviewed and revised again in 2023 to provide further details and alternatives to this amazing industrial sewing machine
It was necessary for me to travel all the way to Stuart Sew and Vac in Jensen Beach, Florida to review the Juki TL 2010Q quilter, but the trip was well worth the time.
Juki TL 2010Q: Overview
The new Juki TL-2010Q is a high-performance sewing and quilting machine. The TL-2010Q is a single-needle, lock-stitch, portable machine, constructed of aluminum die-casting to ensure industrial-quality sewing and quilting. This machine is made for precise sewing, with features like an industrial sub-tension system, a slider for changing the speed, and bright white LED lights. With a large work area of up to 23 inches (with auxiliary table attached), the TL-2000Qi can handle large quilting, sewing, or home decor projects with ease.
Some of my favorite features are the needle up/needle down, speed control, and thread cutter. The thread cutter works when you bounce your heel back and forth on the foot pedal. This is a sturdy workhorse that is strong and nicely made. It only has a straight stitch, though.
Why does that matter? The machine only produces great straight stitches that don't tangle or develop bird's nests on the underside when they are sewn. It features a very quick motor, like a machine used in industry.
Free-motion quilting gives you so much control over your work, and working with a huge quilt is made simpler by the broad throat. The Juki TL2010Q supports speed control, allowing you to select the ideal pace for the job.
- Quiet Operation
- Speed Control
- Free motion quilting
- LED lights dont live up to expectations
- Difficulty in threading the needle
At A Glance
When I first looked at the Juki TL 2010Q, I couldn’t help but remember some of the old industrial sewing machines my grandmother used during her days as a professional seamstress, making customized draperies and slipcovers for prestigious clients in Washington, DC. This machine is practically all metal with easy to understand and use features, including a knee lift for the presser foot, an adjustable presser foot control, a large reverse button, on board thread cutter and needle up/down button. It also has a very large needle plate with etched seam guides and a side loading bobbin that is easily accessible even with the extension table in place. There is also a manual thread tension control on front along with a speed control slider, drop feed control and an oversized stitch length adjustment dial.
Features
- Automatic needle threader
- Automatic thread trimmer
- Extra high presser foot lift (12mm)
- Extended work space
- Drop feed dog
- Needle up/down
- Variable speed control
Working on the Juki TL 2010Q
Winding the bobbin on the Juki TL2010Q is as easy as snapping the bobbin holder into place and pressing the presser foot. The design of this bobbin winding separate mechanism makes it impossible for you to sew while winding the bobbin – something some people might consider to be a drawback of sorts.
Threading the Juki TL 2010Q is easy, although there are no thread guides to follow. If you are at all adept at the workings of a sewing machine, threading the Juki TL 2010Q is a piece of cake. The side loading bobbin housing faces the left side of the machine and is accessible through what resembles a trap door that raises from the outside. Even when the extension table is in place, access to the bobbin housing is quite easy.
The quality of the stitches produced by the Juki TL 2010Q is superlative. Adjusting the stitch length is accomplished by a simple turn of the dial. The reverse stitch lever is situated directly beneath the stitch length adjustment dial and the variable speed control slider is beside the reverse stitch lever.
All this makes for a very efficient sewing experience. Tasks like changing the bobbin, adjusting the stitch length and changing from slow to fast speed sewing are as easy as they could possibly be. The drop feed switch is conveniently located so that freehand sewing is accomplished with ease. Because the switch is situated on the lower right side of the machine head, lowering and raising the feed dogs cannot be easier.
Other Juki alternatives to the Juki TL 2010Q
The Juki HZL F600 is a great quilting and sewing alternative to the Juki TL 2010Q, and the Juki DDL-8700 is a great industrial straight stitch machine. You can also have a look at either of these based on your requirement

Tying Off The Loose Ends
When it comes to home quilting machines, there aren’t many more sewing machines that get the job done as effectively and efficiently as the Juki TL 2010Q. This mechanical straight stitch only machine is a true quilting machine, not a sewing and quilting machine. That makes a huge difference for those home sewers who are machine quilting purists.
Lots and lots of the computerized machines on the market today are promoted as sewing and quilting machines, and they do wonderful work. The issue, however, is that when it comes to machine quilting, the computerized quilting machines have tons of optional quilting stitches that are not the traditional quilting stitches that our grandmothers used when making those heirloom quilts that are cherished for many generations. The stitches made on the Juki TL 2010Q are perfectly formed and well defined regardless of the stitch length setting.
Because of the variable speed control, I think the Juki TL2010Q is an ideal choice for the beginner home quilter from the age of ten on up. While learning to operate it, the Juki TL 2010Q can be set to sew as slow as 200 stitches per minute. As the user’s skill level improves, the speed can be increased until it reaches the maximum speed of 1500 stitches per minute.
This machine is also a good option for the seasoned home quilter who doesn’t have enough space for a large quilting frame, but wants to have access to the precision and freedom of freehand machine quilting on a superior machine. The large space between the needle and the column, coupled with the extension table, even feed foot and adjustable presser foot pressure make working with quilts of all sizes incredibly easy.
It doesn’t take nearly as much space as a full size quilt frame, yet works like a heavy duty industrial quilting machine. During the course of this review at Stuart Sew and Vac, the owner’s wife came by and pointed out that if she did not already have a reliable quilting machine at home, she would definitely think long and hard about purchasing the Juki TL2010Q for herself.
After reviewing this machine, I am certain she was not just trying to make a sale. After all, she knew who I was and why I was there. I will add that if I were a machine quilting enthusiast, I would certainly give buying this some very serious consideration myself.
Summary: Juki TL 2010Q Review
The economical price of < $1000 makes the Juki TL 2010Q one of the most affordable home quilting machines on the market today. The mere fact that this is a Juki means that anyone who decides to add one of these rugged quilting machines to their sewing room inventory will not be disappointed and will enjoy using it for many, many years to come. The Juki name and reputation are not in any way compromised because the TL 2010Q is made for home use rather than in a warehouse or professional sewing studio. It brings with it all of the great quality and workmanship that Juki is known for to the comfort of any home.

Juki HZL Exceed HZL Series Review 300, 400, 600 (2023 update)
When I reviewed the Juki HLZ Exceed series (300, 400 and 600), I was impressed by the simplicity of the machines in this line. The only difference between these three computerized machines is the number of available stitch options. All of three machines in the HLZ Exceed series offer a knee lift; a monochromatic backlit LCD display screen; an oversized workspace and sew up to 900 stitches per minute.
Juki HZL Exceed F600 Quilt & Pro Special Review (2023 update)
I wrote a review of the Juki HZL Exceed series a little while ago. Recently, I had a chance to do a hands-on examination of the F600 Quilt & Pro Special, the top of the Juki Exceed line. This machine is truly one to be seen and experienced in order to be fully appreciated. It is solidly built, produces excellent stitches, doesn’t vibrate and is whisper quiet. Anyone looking for a new sewing and quilting machine owes it to themselves to take a very close look at this one before making a final decision as to which machine to add to their sewing room.
Husqvarna/Viking Designer Jade 35 Review (2023 update)
Many people believe less is more. I think the Husqvarna/Viking Designer Jade 35 is one of those cases where there is definitely a little too much in a small space. It is a combination sewing, quilting and embroidery machine that is not only lightweight and portable, but also so compact that it can easily travel. I am concerned, however, that there is simply far too much going on with this machine. The idea may be a good one, but in my opinion, it needs to be proven in a real home sewing room situation for it to be believed. I would really like to see how well it stands the test of time.

Happy Stitching.
I own this machine and I’m very happy with the performance. I use this machine for FMQ and the stitch quality is amazing. The needle threader takes a little bit to get used to, but after a few attempts I got the hang if it. This is a heavy machine and is built to last. It has a carrying handle and I have taken it to classes. The bobbin holds a lot of thread.
I love this machine! It is so easy to use, the stitch quality is great, and it’s just so easy to use. I also have a Babylock Melody and have found it to be a real pain because of recurring bobbin problems. So, I decided to keep the Juki as my everyday machine and the Babylock to do anything else. I’m a quilter and I make clothes. Honestly, so far, the Juki has handled 99% of my sewing needs. It has NO trouble with thick fabric or multiple layers, which always caused snarls with the Babylock. I am just so impressed with the quality, reliability, and ease of use.
I purchased a Juki TL2010Q about 2 months ago and would not trade this sewing machine for any of the fancier ones. I also have an older Husky and a fairly new Janome machine but the juki is out performing them both on straight sewing. Since purchasing this juki, I have stitch 4 queen size quilt tops and never once did I have any problems with my juki. the bobbin kept running out on the janome but not the juki. Straight sewing, not a problem and I love their 1/4 inch sewing foot.
Getting ready to use this Juki with a quilting frame and know it will do what i want.
Hi Arlene,
Have you used your Juki 2010Q with a quilting frame yet? How do you like it? What all is necessary to attach this machine to the frame? Overall, do you like using it like a long arm vs. sit down machine? I keep coming back to this Juki, i’ve watched you-tube videos & it looks great but would like to have input from a fellow quilter. I have a computerized Brother sewing/embroidery machine and it’s ok. Wanting larger throat space, larger bobbin capacity and easier tension adjustment. Your input would be appreciated.
I recently loaded my Juki 2010Q on a Grace frame. I also purchased a Sew Steady ruler table for it. The add-on stitch regulator did not work consistently. I preferred using it without the regulator. It sewed beautifully from left to right. When sewing from right to left my thread broke constantly. I found that I only had 5 – 6″ of space to quilt during each pass, so vertical designs were difficult. As I rolled the quilt the bulk reduced that space even more until there was no more room (at about 1/3 of my quilt). I removed the quilt and finished quilting it on another domestic machine. I would only mount a machine with an extra large throat (a longarm head) and one that is designed to or more comfortable quilting in all directions. I’m a little disappointed in that experiment, but happy that I now get to use my Juki 2010Q as my every day machine again. It’s always been my favorite, so I’m happy to have it at my disposal again.
Can you tell me the throat size?
I’m an intermediate quilter, and I need a quilting machine of my own in order to take my craft to the next level. Does this machine have a quilting foot that would allow me to stipple my quilts? Or could I only quilt in straight lines?
If someone could please explain this to me, I’d be grateful! Thanks in advance! – Caren
Hello Caren –
Thank you for visiting Sewing Insight.
The TL 2010Q is a straight stitch machine only. Stippling on this machine is not an option.
Happy stitching.
Although the machine is straight stitch only, it does include both a 1/4″ and a 1/5″ quilting foot. Just put one of these on, drop the feed dogs and stipple away! (As well as any other free machine quilting design you want to do.)
It’s a quilting machine it will do stippling
Your wrong, this machine is a quilting machine and stippling is no problem.
I have had my 2010Q for three years. It is on a Gracie King Frame. Mine came with 2 sizes quilting feet. I lowered the feed dogs and raised the pressure on the foot to zero. I do the majority of my quilts in stipple. Never skipped a stitch or mis-behaved in any way…love this machine.
Mine came with two quilting/darning feet. I purchased it because a girl in my guild does all of her quilting on her Juki. The feed dogs do drop, as far as I know, so you could quilt however you wish. However, when sewing it is only a straight stitch machine. Hope that helps.
Hi Caron, I just bought this machine on Monday September 18th for the FMQ capability. This machine has two FMQ feet along with 6 other feet. It is a wonderful machine and I am happy I made the purchase. I have a quilting and embroidery machine as well but my new Juki is a workhorse that can sew thru 10+ layers of denim and still able to sew thru 2 layers of cotton quilting fabric with beautiful stitches. Love it. A+++++ machine.
Yes, I do free motion stipple quilting on this machine all the time. Just be sure to drop the feed dogs. The variable speed makes free motion quilting easy!
Can this machine be used for fmq or not?
The reply to Caren was that she could not stipple with this machine, but Clarice, the first poster, said she uses it to fmq.
If it is possible to drop the feed dogs, then I do not see why you could not fmq/stipple.
Sharon Schamber(?) has a stipple foot specifically for the Juki. So, yes, you can.
Yes, you can fmq with this Juki 2010Q. I do it all the time. You can drop the feed dogs, raise the foot pressure to zero, stitch length to zero, and away I go…Have had my machine for three years. No problem fmq with it on a quilting frame or sitting on my work table. You either move the fabric, while on the table, or you move the machine, while on the frame….
Do u still love your Juki 2010Q. I am strongly considering
You can do any free motion quilting with this machine. You would manually move the fabric to create the stitch patterns, like Leah Day. She uses this machine in conjunction to her Juki Exceed. This machine is excellent in two things- straight stitching (which is perfect for piecing) and free motion quilting.
Hi Vernelle,
Excellent review.
Because I live far from a Juki dealer, I just bought this TL2010Q online, with delivery scheduled for April 26, 2016. While I don’t quilt, I want the machine’s speed, the needle up/down, knee lift and power to sew through layers without blinking. I have a wimpy pair of machines at this time that lack or compromise these features: a Viking Emerald 116 dances around at full speed, no needle down, hates thick stuff; a Pfaff 2023 no needle down, hesitates to get to speed, makes birds nests, no presser foot tension adjustment.
Cheers,
Jeff
I am wanting to travel with my Juki TL-2010Q on an airplane. Has anyone else done this and how have you packed it, etc.? Hints, suggestions welcome!
Karen
I am looking for a sewing machine to make bags and purses. My older Pfaff 1473 does a nice job on cotton, including multiple layers. But sometimes has a problem when I add heavy interfacing, foam interfacing or use home dec fabrics for the bags instead if quilt weight cottons. Any suggestions?
The Juki 2010Q sounds good but the $1600 price tag is a bit high, I can get a Juki industrial machine with servo motor for $700 new. Not pretty or portable but faster and more powerful. Would rather have something easier to move, the industrial machine is super heavy.
Do u still love your Juki 2010Q. I am strongly considering
