Janome DC 2012 Review (2023 Update)
Note from the Editor: This Janome DC 2012 review was written in 2013, and has been revised and updated in 2023. This model has now been discontinued. We have added similar alternatives such as Brother CS7000X, Elnita EM16, and Brother CP100X.
On a recent visit to the Sunshine Sewing Center in Margate, Florida, I had an opportunity to review the Janome DC 2012. Like new cars, the folks at Janome offer a special Décor Computerized sewing machine each year.
Also like new cars, there are very few if any changes from one model year to the next. The 2012 and 2013 are very similar, and all indications are that the 2014 will not be any different. Both the 2012 and 2013 have detachable work tables that reveal a free arm, drop feed and 50 stitches.
According to Faye, the owner of Sunshine, the only true difference is the color used on the front panel.

The machine also includes an automatic needle threader, making it easy and convenient to thread the needle.
The DC 2012 has an adjustable stitch length and width, allowing users to customize the stitch according to their specific needs. Other useful features of the Janome DC 2012 include a reverse stitch function, allowing the user to reinforce stitches or sew in reverse, and a memorized needle up/down function, which makes it easier to pivot or change direction while sewing. The machine also has a built-in thread cutter, making it convenient to cut threads after sewing. The DC 2012 is a reliable and versatile machine that is suitable for a range of sewing projects, making it a great choice for sewers of all skill levels.
This model is now discontinued. We recommend trying out other alternatives that we have added to this post.
The DC 2012 is smaller than many of the other sewing machines in the shop.
On board function buttons control stitch locking, reverse stitching and needle up and down.
The Janome DC 2012 also has a variable speed slider, on board threading guides and seam guides etched on the needle plate.
What are the features on Janome DC 2012?

- Up/Down needle position buttons

Working on the Janome DC 2012
Easy to follow diagrams tell you how to wind the bobbin and thread the machines in the Janome DC series. A decal on the clear bobbin cover shows you the right way to insert the bobbin in the bobbin case.
The decorative and utility stitch options are highlighted in lime green on the front panel. Stitch numbers are shown in white circles above the picture of the stitch.
Beneath each picture is a letter denoting which presser foot is required for each stitch.
From left to right, the white buttons above the stitch selection guide enable users to choose between utility and decorative stitches and to increase or decrease stitch length and width
The first button, the menu button, is the key. The lighted green dot to the left of the ‘0’ in the photo tells you which function is being controlled. When the ‘#’ is lit, you can choose your stitch option.
Pressing the menu button a second time will take you to the stitch width function, moving the lighted green dot to the middle position.
A third touch of the menu button will enable you to make your stitch length longer or shorter.
The stitches produced by the Janome DC 2012 are clean, well formed and sturdy. For this particular review, I sampled several decorative stitches and even used the appliqué stitch to attaché a small heart shaped appliqué.
The one thing that I don’t especially like about the Janome DC 2012 is something that is apparently common on many newer sewing machine models.
I can’t for the life of me understand why the lever to control the drop feed function is on the back of the machine, beneath the removable work table.
When you are busily sewing and decide you want to engage the drop feed – even to sew on a button – you must first remove the work table. To me, this is a very inefficient waste of time.
A small heart shaped appliqué
If you ask me, this is one of those innovations that was put into place by someone who doesn’t sew and has no idea how impractical the placement of this essential feature truly is. The sooner they move the drop feed control back to the front of sewing machines, the better.
What are some alternatives for Janome DC 2012?
We have mentioned in this review that the Janome DC 2012 is no longer manufactured. Here are some alternatives that we recommend instead.

Summary: Janome DC2012 Overview
The sewing machines in the Janome Décor Computerized series are well built sturdy machines that are capable of making home décor items like drapes and cushion covers as easily as making a delicate blouse or dress.
The stitch quality is superlative and operation is easy enough for a beginner to master with just a little bit of supervision. I would not hesitate to recommend these machines be used to teach a child in elementary school the basics of machine sewing.
The long list of optional and standard accessories make these machines an ideal option for the intermediate and advanced home sewer who is looking for a computerized sewing machine to add to their sewing room. It is lightweight, easy to move about, and reliable.
I’m not at all thrilled with the placement of the drop feed controller, but all other function buttons and controls are easy to reach and user friendly.
The Janome Décor Computerized series has been around since 2010. No doubt, there’s a very good reason for this series to continue to be manufactured. My disdain over moving the drop feed controller is not limited to the newer Janomes.
I have noticed the very same problem on other machines as well. One of these days, I would like to get an explanation from someone who was part of the decision making team that approved this completely inefficient move.
Thank you for allowing me to vent. Now back to the Janome DC 2012. With that one exception, the Janome entire Décor Computerized series are very good sewing and quilting machines that are great affordable options for sewers of all ages and sewing skills.
Visit your local Janome dealer for a demonstration of the newer models in the series. If you are in the market for older models, you might be able to find them on the web on sites like e-bay or amazon.com.

Happy Stitching.
My DC2007LE is identical to the 2012-13. Does this mean the series really began before 2010?
I love everything about this machine…. The more I learn about it, and the Jsnome brand, the I am glad I bought it… This was my third Janome… I’ve owned a Jem Gold, and a Jem Platinum.
I agree that the feed dog drop lever is in a very inconvenient place, it is easy to forget that you have dropped the feed dogs…. And… Who wants to reach around to the Babi of the machine.
Thank you for a very helpful review.
Sandy Tignor
Hello, Sandy –
Thank you for visiting Sewing Insight.
I took a look at the Janome site and discovered that your DC 2007 LE is indeed a predecessor of the DC 2010-11-12-13 and 14.
It appears that the folks at Janome discovered that they had a winner and decided to stick with it. Too bad they didn’t think it was necessary to move that feed dog control lever in all these years. It’s still a great machine though.
Happy Stitching.
Yep! My DC2007LE is be if a great line of sewing machines… She’s a true workhorse…. She has lots of great features that some brands only put in their higher end products. My very favorite, is the needle up/down function…. It has a memory, and I use it all the time.
It wasn’t until I did the research, that I realized what a great machine I had…. I think i thought all seeing machines performed like my .janomes.
I checked out the midrange models of both Brother and Singer. While each brand had a couple of decent machines, they all got mixed reviews…. This worried me….. What if I got one if the “bad” ones? I couldn’t’t believe some of the things I read…. Yikes!
OYOH, Janome seeing machines…..from the Jems on up, got consistently excellent reviews. The price range was definitely not a factor when it came to producing a solid, reliable product, that can be trusted to give years of good service.
The only reason I bought my first Janome…in 2001…was that the shop that I was taking my first quilting class from, carried Janomes…. I knew nothing about sewing machines…nothing. The machine was there, I needed one, so I bought it… Lucky me…
Would I recommend a Janome? Yes…. For all skill levels… You can’t go wrong with a Janome…
Sandy
I am having bobbin trouble with my Janome DC 2007LE. When I am sewing any pattern, the bobbin thread is doing the regular thread stitch on the top.. And the regular thread is doing the bobbin pattern on the top (the visible stitch).. So my stitch is literally backwards. My patterned stitch is on the backside of my sewing.
Have you encountered such difficulty at all with yours?
Can you suggest or tell me what is going wrong?
thank you for your great review.
I bought my Janome 924 in 1993 and thankful it was a good machine, it is computerized and has nice features, I just may not get a new one.
My old machine is a ’70s era Kenmore that I was told could no longer be repaired. After extensive research, I chose the DC2013. It’s an excellent machine. Thanks so much for the video. It helped me advance 40-something years in technology!
Great video, helped me buy the dc2012 was a great deal on amazon. The only thing I question is the dc2012 DOES or DOES NOT come with a walking foot and a 1/4″ foot it looked like only the dc2013 does. Anyway video was an awesome help!
Thank you for the informative video. I have been sewing for only a few months, and I am still taking classes. So far, I can make sofa pillows, hem a curtain, hem pants, and I recently have learned how to take in the sides of a men’s shirt (I have altered the dress shirts I have to wear to work). My machine is a Janome DC2013. Speaking as a novice, the machine is user-friendly, and the instruction book is good. However– I can learn better by watching someone perform a particular maching function, and then practicing it myself. Although I can perform the basics on my machine, the video helped me a lot. I will refer to it again later when I get into the more decorative stitching.
Your sewing machine reviews are excellent. I have recommended them to folks new to the sewing game looking for a good machine for beginners. I am a Janome girl, and my workhorse machine is a New Home Memory Craft 4000, purchased around 1990, my first computerized machine! I also own the DC 2007LE as my backup machine. barely noticed where the drop feed dog switch is located, as I have only dropped them once for a free-motion embroidery project. It’s something to consider if it is a feature you use frequently. Thanks for the helpful reviews!
