Janome CoverPro 1000CPX – Overview
With Janome's Seam Tightening System (STS), which reduces the amount of slack in the looper thread for flat, tight, and long-lasting stitches, this coverstitch machine makes seams that are more secure. Additionally, this machine features a free-arm design, which makes it simpler to handle your clothing. Complete difficult-to-reach sections like waistbands, sleeves, and cuffs fast and effortlessly.
You can quickly and easily discover the stitch you want with the machine's front-mounted, easy-to-read stitch tag. A colorful reference chart on the sticker allows you to make adjustments for a tighter or softer stitch without having to consult the instruction book. Along with the different stitches, the tension settings for both tight and loose seams are shown. Additionally, the machine displays a color-coded threading chart, which makes threading simple.
You have the choice of working with one, two, or three needles while using the Pro CPX1000. A regular 6mm stitch width may be changed to a tiny 3mm thread width. Additionally, the stitch length may be changed from 1mm to 4mm. A tension release device is also included into the machine, and the differential feed ratio varies from 0.5 to 2.25.
At A Glance
When you first see the Janome Coverpro 1000CPX, your first impression is that it is a cross between a traditional sewing machine and a serger. It has four thread spindles with an extension rod to accommodate thread cones and individual tension dials, making you think it’s a serger; but the work table makes it look more like a regular sewing machine. Upon closer examination, you see that this machine has three separate needles… again making one think it is some kind of serger. Perhaps the most impressive thing of all about this machine, however, the easy to understand graphics on front that give detailed interpretations of how to execute various stitch options… not the number of needles and thread cones or the question about whether it’s a serger, a sewing machine or some sort of hybrid combination of the two. This one feature alone is possibly the best.

Working on the Janome Coverpro 1000CPX
We were pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to thread the Coverpro 1000CPX… far less complicated than threading any serger we have seen to date. We believe that threading this particular machine was made even easier by the manufacturer’s thoughtful inclusion of a color coded threading and set up guide on the inside looper cover as well as on front of the machine itself. These handy guides not only tell users how to thread the machine, but how to set the tension dials and needle positions for specific functions.
This information is, of course also found in the owner’s manual, but having it right at our fingertips made the entire process much quicker and user friendly. STS, the exclusive Janome Seam Tightening System™ uses a spring rather than the looper tension dial to eliminate excessive looper thread looseness, making it possible to get a perfectly flat, tight stitch on thick fabrics such as denim and wide wale corduroy. The control for this function is conveniently placed immediately beneath the coverstitch tutorial guide on front of the machine. It is by far one of the most user friendly machines we have seen or had the pleasure of working on. Whoever designed the Janome Coverpro 1000CPX certainly had the user in mind. Even though we were not specifically looking for it, we were pleased to find added space beneath the needle.
One of the best things about the Coverpro 1000CPX is that you have to change the needle position and switch needles in and out to make different stitches.
Moving needles is a breeze… especially for sewers with minor dexterity challenges. In addition, the very large sewing sewing space – 4” x 5.5” – makes it possible to top stitch and execute a variety of coverstitches in the middle of the garment with ease. The placement of the presser foot lifter was even taken into consideration when this machine was designed.
After working on many, many sewing machines and sergers, we were pleased to be able to access the presser foot lifter on the Janome Coverpro 1000CPX without having to feel around for it or take our eyes off our work to physically locate it. This also holds true for the conveniently placed dials to control and change the stitch length and width on the right side, just above the power switch. The exclusive Janome Superior Needle System dictates that Schmetz ELX 705 needles be used exclusively with the Coverpro 1000CPX. The Schmetz ELX 705 is an industrial type needle, built to be sturdier than most other needles designed for use in coverstitch machines and with extra long grooves on the front and back of the needle.
Alternatives to the Janome CoverPro 1000CPX
The CoverPro 900CPX and the Singer Professional 5 are great alternatives to the Janome CoverPro 1000XPX. Details below:
A coverstitch sewing machine with several features that are ideal for at-home sewers is the Janome CoverPro 900CPX. Tying Off The Loose Ends
As much as we like this machine, we would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the warnings posted by the manufacturer in the owner’s manual. “The machine is not intended for use by children or infirmed persons without proper supervision. Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when this sewing machine is used by or near children.” No doubt, this advice should be taken into account for use of any machinery, but on some level, sewing machines are a little different. No one who is the least bit cognizant about the workings of a sewing machine would allow a child to operate it without supervision or to encourage its use by anyone who is not physically able to do so.
However, the mere fact that this is the very first thing you see in this owner’s manual is a clear indication that this is not a machine for beginners. There are hundreds of machines on the market that are specifically designed to be suitable for use by students … and this includes children who are learning to sew. This reviewer, for example, received their very first sewing machine at the age of eight. It was a very simple, single stitch only crank machine with the fewest moving parts possible. The Janome Coverpro 1000CPX, however, is not one of those machines. While some may choose to disagree, we take the position that no coverstitch machine or serger should be operated by children.
There are simply too many moving parts and too many chances for being cut or injured. Having said that, the Coverpro 1000CPX is an ideal addition to the sewing room of anyone who is adept at sewing basics and ready to stretch their options to include the versatility and flexibility that comes with owning such a specialized machine. The stitches made by this machine are just as good as those made by a professional sewing room. We sampled several stitch options and were more than just satisfied with the results.
Depending upon your desired results for topstitch or flat lock stitches, you have the option of using either side of your fabric. Regardless of our choice, you can be assured of perfectly executed, professional quality workmanship each and every time. In conclusion… we believe that the advanced home sewer is the most ideal customer for this or any specialized sewing machine. However, intermediate sewers, whose skill levels rest somewhere on the high end of ‘intermediate’ and lean more toward the advanced or expert level could benefit from adding the Coverpro 1000CPX to their sewing rooms as well. This recommendation is primarily because of the many useful tutorials and user friendly design of this particular machine. In addition, the Janome Coverpro 1000CPX has a manufacturer’s suggest retail price of just $700, making it even more attractive for the home sewer who is ready to explore the possibilities of adding a coverstitch machine to their personal sewing machine inventory.
What is a Coverstitch machine?

I recently purchased the CoverPro 1000 CPX at the list price of $799, however, all of the accessories you mention were not included. The additional feet and accessories would have cost about an additional $400. I am very pleased with the capability of this machine.
The list of accessories in my review was given to me by the sales staff at Ace Sewing and Vacuum Center in Pompano Beach, FL. Since the machine, itself was on the display floor, and the accessories were in the original carton in the storeroom, I did not question the veracity of the list.
You did not state which accessories you did in fact receive with your Coverpro. Hopefully you at least received all of the presser feet, the seam guide and the items essential for keeping your machine clean and free of dust and lint.
If a vendor gives me an accessories list in the future because the accessories are not available for me to photograph, I shall be sure to ask them to identify all of the optional items on the list.
I agree with Barbara. I bought my cover pro 1000cpx for $799 too and all those accessories were NOT included in the box.the items I did receive was the basic stuff: needles, screwdriver, needle thread and accessory case. There were No additional presser feet and no seam guides and no DVD. My dealer gave me the center guide feet as a gift so he knew they weren’t included. So I think that your review shouldn’t say “it includes all these accessories” but rather a sales person gave it to you and you assumed it’s included. To say so is misleading….
Above it sais that the coverpro can be used for pintucking. How is this done???? There is no pin tuck foot, at least as I can see. Do you have any hints on how this is done on this machine?

Thanks for visiting Sewing Insight. Pintucking on the Coverpro is a trick that I learned while visiting Ace Sewing and Vacuum. As I recall, the secret was using one of the tape binder attachments rather than a traditional pintuck foot. Of course the technique appeared very simple at at the time. Unfortunately, I don’t remember all of the steps taken to accomplish the task. If you have the time, I suggest you play around with it a little bit. In the meantime, I may just drop in on my friends at Ace and ask them for a refresher.

I too would be really interested to know how to pintuck fabrics with the Janome Coverpro ; ))
To pintuck use 2 needles and then tighten all of your tension dials up to around 5 or 6. Then simply adjust the tension to fit your needs.

I’m a fairly new owner of a ‘very’ nearly new coverpro 1000cpx but am having a lot of problems with the lower looper threading through the STS spring. If I use this the machine will not sew correctly and the needle threads meet in the middle of the underside of the fabric. I can get it to sew on most fabrics apart from fine knit jersey(a bit like a silky knit lining) which it won’t accept at all.
Nobody in the UK seems to know about the machine including Janome who had to take a brand new one out of the box to let me know how to thread the lower looper thread through this spring. Even the dealers don’t have the CPX to demonstrate, only the 1000CP so they can’t help me.
I’m desperate for some help, pleeeease!
