I had been reading about the new Husqvarna Designer series and one day received an e-mail asking me to review the Designer Diamond Royale sewing and embroidery machine.
The timing was perfect. Just a few days later, I had a great time playing with several of the new sewing machines from Husqvarna/Viking.

Working on the Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale
Most sewing machines beep when you turn them on or simply don’t make a sound. The Husqvrna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale, however, plays a whimsical tune when the switch is turned to the on position.
Winding the bobbin and threading the Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale is the easiest thing about operating this machine. In my opinion, the stitch selection process is far too complicated for most beginners.
The first thing you must do is touch the stitch menu button on the touch screen. A series of different stitch options opens for you to choose from utility stitches, decorative stitches, embroidery stitches or quilting stitches.
Once the menu opens up, touch the stitch option you want and then touch the button to lower the presser foot and press the start/stop button.
The stop button is a great feature for ending a series of design stitches at the starting point, making it possible for you to complete a series of design stitches neatly.
For this review, although the Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale is a sewing and embroidery machine, I decided to test several different utility and decorative stitch options.
I was very impressed with the quality of the stitches made on the Designer Diamond Royale. The utility stitches are clean and well formed and the decorative stitches have great definition.
Although I didn’t personally sample any of the embroidery options, Janet, the Husqvarna/Viking embroidery guru at Ace Sewing and Vacuum eagerly showed me the mask she made on the Designer Diamond Royale and a special embroidery project she did for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Both jobs were exquisite in detail and workmanship.
The clear bobbin cover is a plus, but with the on board sensor to tell you when it’s time to add thread, this feature isn’t really necessary.
I noticed that with all its features, there isn’t a drop feed. That’s because the feed dogs automatically drop down when you select a darning stitch or another stitch that does not require the feed dogs to be in the raised position.
The feature I like most of all is the fact that it is not necessary to remove the embroidery arm in order to sew.
This gives you an extra large workspace which comes in handy when working on those large sewing projects, like dresses, jackets, pants and coats.
When it’s time to use the free arm the embroidery unit slides off easily by pushing the lever on the underside and sliding it off the machine. It goes back on just as easily when you’re ready to get back to work on larger pieces.

Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale Summary
To conclude my review, the Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale is an interesting sewing and embroidery machine. This is the first machine I’ve ever seen with an appliqué program that allows you to sew on pieces of fabric, creating your own appliqués with ease.
It is also one of the few sewing and embroidery machines on the market that allows you to perform regular sewing tasks with the embroidery unit in place.
I also like the fact that the e-lights can be adjusted not only for brightness, but also to change color, depending upon your particular needs and whim.
This is definitely not a machine for beginners. I am tempted to add that it should not be used by people with intermediate sewing skills – those who can follow a pattern, sew basic patterns and are exploring machine embroidery.
A sewing and embroidery machine like the Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale is far too complicated for someone who has limited sewing skills.
I believe if you are going to spend the monetary equivalent of a good used car on a sewing machine, you should be able to use it extensively in order to get your money’s worth.
If, on the other hand, you are already adept at machine embroidery and want to step up to a top of the line sewing and embroidery machine with computer capability and upgradable software, then Husqvarna/Viking Designer Diamond Royale is definitely worth a close look.
This is a perfect choice for the machine embroidery expert who is in the market for a fully computerized sewing and embroidery machine.

I’ve been able to ‘play’ with the Royale at my dealer’s. If you are used to computerized embroidery machines, or if you have had another Viking embroidery machine, the learning curve is not excessive.
Granted, it is an expensive machine, but if you are a serious machine embroiderer or quilter or sewist, this machine could last you for a long time. Viking continues to amaze me with their innovations in sewing & embroidery machines.
It is Wonderful with a capital W. The screen that is always “in focus” no matter where you are sitting is so convenient. The neat way the machine automatically moves out of the way so you can change bobbins in embroidery mode is another hidden “gem”. There are absolutely dozens of improvements–too many to list. That said, I do have one problem–an old one from previous Viking machines: the thread coming from the 8-thread rack still gets messed up when feeding into the machine. I am using my “old” technique of bringing it down and through the upright spool holder where I lead it horizontally into the machine. Related to that: the metal thread guide meant to attach to the machine cover from the thread rack doesn’t fit right (too wide for the plastic holder) AND if attached permanently (after being squeezed somewhat narrower), it would interfere with closing the cover.
You can do free motion on the Designer Diamond by touching the icon on the home screen that looks like Stippling. From it you have a choice of Free Motion Floating or Free Motion Spring Action. When you pick one of these two options the feed teeth automatically drop so you don’t need a separate drop feed teeth.
Also I have the metal thread guide attached to my machine cover and my lid closes perfectly. I use the thread rack and love it. This is an awesome machine! So many techniques to try and so little time!

Aside from some changes ‘under the hood’, the biggest difference between the Designer Diamond and the Designer Diamond Royale is the fact that the Designer Diamond Royale has about 100 more stitches than its predecessor.

Between the Designer Diamond and Designer Diamond Royale they are also the fact, you don’t have to write which stiches you are stopping your project, you just save it, and it will remember exactly where your design will be in your hoop. very useful if you hydro go out

I am very disappointed with the Diamond Royale. This is my 3rd machine that the dealership had to change since purchasing it in May and each one has had problems.. V
What were your issues? I purchased a new machine two months ago and it’s worked very good until yesterday when, while embroidering, I started to hear a clunking sound on the arm. I had to stop the machine and take it in. I was told they would have to send it in for service to see what the issue was and that would take up to 10 days. I’m not happy that a 2 month old new machine had any issues. This is my third Viking Sewing machine and until now I’ve been very happy.

5-stars all the way! I love my Royale. Have had it from the first shipment of those machines in the USA. It is terrific. Once I said I had a problem with the 8-thread rack but found out that was me. The Royale is my best machine ever. I would recommend it to any and all.
No keep your diamond deluxe as a second machine… I have a designer 1 w/floppy…..thought about trading it in … but traded in other Machine … purchased diamond royale and kept my designer 1 as a back up… Glad I did.. And yes I do love my royale… It is my machine of choice.
I understand you being upset. I’ve learned through over 11 years using Viking that some machine don’t work from the get-go and others are great workhorses. One thing is, UPS drivers throw these machines around like they’re nothing. My dealer told me about how she told a UPS guy off because he was throwing machines all around at the Viking dealership. He told her had no choice, as he had a route time to stick to and had to hurry. In that group of machines, I actually got a Ruby that didn’t work. It didn’t turn on or do anything. I got full refund and decided not to stick with Rubies, but to upgrade to Diamond Deluxe. It’s be great, with only a couple minor repairs. I would suggest that you have an honest talk with your dealer (not an angry one) and ask if you could get a replacement. It would be up to the dealer if you get one, but ask and see if you can get a better running machine.

I got their response from the head office, finally got my diamond royale back today,after being repair for 10 times, as I get into the house with it, it fells apart a my feet in 2 pieces, This is unbelievable they change the belt stretcher, rubber damper motor, driving wheel motor, sewing head frame, cog wheel, motor belt, and it does that to me, when back to the store waiting again for help!!! I want another machine this one is a nightmare, hope to get help, I want to do embroidery and sewing, this is why a purchase the machine!!!
Wow I can relate . I bought my first Diamond royale in October 2014 and I am on my second machine as well they have replaced and I just dropped it off to go to be evaluated yet again. for repair or whatever. This second machine has had the control panel replace after 2 months worth of use and Highly frustrated. I cannot even get to the more complex stitches before one thing or another goes wrong. I have one been able to embroider twice and they were small projects. at this point i just want a refund……
I have a question. My husband bought my the designer diamond Royale this week from a dealer who is closing. So I have done two designs and on both of them, it was going great and then it began to pull the bobbin thread into the pattern. What am I doing wrong?
when this happen to me, I retread the machine, and remove the bobbin and replace it, this help resolve the problem
Same thing happens to me. Only my second attempt at using the embroidery function. The first design worked out okay, but still pulled up the bobbin thread into the design. On my second attempt, the bobbin thread has been pulled through, plus the top thread comes out in a straight line. Obviously a tension problem. Tried to increase the tension through the settings program — didn’t help. And then I tried to decrease the tension the same way. Didn’t help — did the same exact thing. Instructor from store shared with me how to increase the tension in the bobbin casing itself — couldn’t find the screw and then do you have to turn it back to do regular sewing. Not happy with this machine — the designer I was my first machine. One really has to be a rocket scientist to work these machines.
Since bobbin tension is automatic, clean the bobbin area. Then, make sure the bobbin race is seated in the machine correctly, the instructions in the book tell you how. Then carefully rethread, making sure your pressure foot is up and the thread take-up (on the top left of machine) is at the top, not down towards the needle. If you still have a problem, turn it in for repair. It may be that the machine is ‘out of sync or timing’ (like bad timing on a car causes problems).
Also, I was told to use only Gutterman thread or Madiera (spelling?) I have used Aurifil, and my Diamond Deluxe machine shredded it to bits. So, I stick to Gutterman only and no more problems. OH–and NO Coats and Clark’s thread…it will cause your machine to malfunction. Hope this helps.
I was thinking about upgrading, but my dealer told me to keep my Designer 1 (w/floppy) as a back up and just buy a different machine. She said I wouldn’t get very much for my D1 and it would just be best to keep it as a backup.
I would LOVE to have the Diamond Royale, but doubt I can afford one. 🙁
Did you try to sell your D1 locally? I sold my Janome some years ago and got 3K for it. Sometimes selling like that works, and sometimes not. I had the Floppy D1, and it drove me nuts, I hated it and got the Diamond Deluxe. I am tech savvy and hated that the D1 was so out of date. I had lots of trouble with designs on floppy. Some of them I bought were digitized incorrectly, so they stitched out all wrong..then I couldn’t get the same designs again because they were off the market. Now, with downloadable designs to my USB stick, it’s much easier and I haven’t had any trouble with the designs I’ve bought being drawn incorrectly by the designers or the design companies.
Try and get an ‘open box’ Royale. It’s a trade in machine, and likely has low sewing hours on it. You get a 1 yr. warranty on it, just like new-in-box. My dealer quoted me $6400.00 with $2,000 trade in for my Diamond Deluxe if I wanted to.
I did the “open box” trade in for the Royale. Nightmare!. My gut tells me I should send it out for repair because the tension is a huge problem both when sewing and embroidery. I get about 25 stitches before the thread breaks. I think my previous had the same problems and somehow the machine was set out for sale rather than checking it over for problems. It also makes this God awful noise when calibrating and aligning the hoop for stitching out.
Such a hassle to have to have a new machine sent out.
It took 12 time for them to repaired and was worst every time it came back, they change the motor, the basket and the back cover on the last repair, want it me to try it again, enough is enough, they finally gave me a new one with warranty with the exception, no service in town, they will ship it to Toronto (6 hours away) even for minor problems, and they will charge me the shipping cost!!!! if I knew then what I know now I will never had purchased this Husqvarna Designer Diamond Royale
I had the same problem. Took mine in and they found the black bobbin holder damaged. All it took for me was replacing the black bobbin holder. A 40$ piece or free if still under warranty. You can take it out and look at it. Mine was beat up inside. It should be very smooth. No problems with sewing or embroidery with my machine now. I bought an extra one just in case it happens again.
I purchased a Diamond Royale October 2013, it been repair 9 times so far, first time was the mother board needed to be change…7 times for the same problem broken shaft, after only a few hours continuously the shaft broke.
I love all the others features, easy to learn to work with, after you try this machine and see all the features that she can do you’ll fell in love with this machine, but I’m getting frustrated of losing my machine every time you need to be sent to be repair.
Right now waiting for them to repair it again!!!
What you’ve gone through, I’d be fighting for a ‘open box’ machine as a replacement for your troublemaking machine. Just my 2 cents….In my opinion, you’re getting ripped off. My dealer replaced a machine I had when it acted up, no questions. I guess it depends on the dealer. Have you contacted Viking corporate?
yes I did, they said someone will contact me, but so far nothing, its been over 2 months. I keep trying to contact them, but no luck, it look that they don’t want to talk directly to the customer !!!1
I am awaiting a repair yet again it has been in repair more than i have had it my possession. since purchase had 6 weeks then needed repair, then had 1 month needed repair so they traded it for another unit, then this unit has been at the repair more than i have had it. awaiting yet again….. sad….frustrated.
I’m about to get my third or fourth Royale. I have yet to get what I’ve paid for . This machine is a lemon…..so sad. They don’t seem to want to make it right. Losing all faith in this brand
I have owned the Royale since about 7 mos after it came out. I LOVE IT. I have used Vikings high end machines for many years. Some things about the Royale that may help solve some problems: it is thread sensitive. Don’t use cheap thread. I have no problems with Floriani embroidery thread. The cheap threads will not stitch well. Rethread and remove bobbin and make SURE to hear the CLICK as you reinsert the thread. This is a computer sensitive machine and should be to give you the best. The stitches on the back of my embroideries are as beautiful as on the front. I use it nearly every day. It is flawless. I run it full speed to test all the claims and it has done all flawlessly. It has been to the shop only once and I discovered that it was the quality of the these. I was using an old metallic. It has run non stop with a good metallic thread for hours without even breaking a thread. You do however need to know how to place thread holder and prepare and run machine speed correctly. This machine is a workhorse. Get to know it better and watch you tube videos for a new technique you wish to try.
I don’t own the Royale, but I own the machine ‘below’ it in the Viking line, the Diamond Deluxe. I disagree strongly with the reviewer’s comments that the machine is too advanced for anyone who doesn’t have experience in sewing or embroidery. That’s simply not true. A beginner could easily use this machine and learn as she goes. There are classes available FREE to Viking machine owners. All you have to do to learn about the Royale (or any machine) is ask the dealer to teach you. They will give you an appointment to sit and teach you anything you want to know…even the embroidery functions. There’s NO excuse not to learn and grow with a Viking embroidery machine. I have owned my Deluxe for 1 1/2 years and I love it. I have sewn quilts, done repair sewing for my husbands’ work uniforms and made things for my home and also done some embroidery. The machine is easy to use, just follow the owner’s manual. Over time, the functions will be second nature to you and embroidery will be easy to do. I have seen other Diamond Deluxe owners from my local Viking dealer bring in items they’ve made with the embroidery unit, and everything was simply beautiful. This reviewer’s comments were slanted towards the negative. Instead of believing her, GO to your local Viking dealer and see for yourself. Sometimes dealers will have ‘open box’ machines available for a discount, so you don’t have to pay full price. As soon as I can afford it, I’ll be upgrading to the Royale machine.
I had a topaz 50 and learned on it. Had gotten it to where I could do anything and never messed up. I upgraded to a diamond royale. So far, it’s been a terrible mistake. I’ve thrown away almost as many items as I’ve been able to keep. It is very thread sensitive. It will do 3/4’s of a design and then tons of thread underneath, along with an odd noise. Not happy at all. I want my Topaz back. Taking it in tomorrow.
Upon checking my machine out at the dealer, it was noted that the black plastic piece that holds the bobbin (don’t know proper term) was rough inside and appeared damaged. They replaced it and it sounds so much better and has worked wonderfully thus far. Hoping that was the fix. Just wanted to share.
I have the topaz 25 and thinking about upgrading to the 50, are you happier with the 50? Any problems with tension, thread or stopping during embroidering? My 25 has issues and has ruined several projects. Thanks

I have just bought a 2nd hand Diamond Royale and thought I need to get some info on this machine. I have just sewn my first design and it went great. Just the tractor noise of the arm moving is new to me as I also have a Janome Memory Craft 11000 which is not a noisy machine. Going onto the tutorials of the Daimond Royale (which is awesome) it is also noted there that the noise is normal. I also have the Ruby Deluxe which is the most awesome Machine. I am on my second Husqvarna/Viking machine this one being a diamond royale. the first one worked fairly well. This one is a nightmare. Have yet to have one design stitch out properly. Tension is totally messed up, always nesting, thread breaking. Straight sewing does the same thing. Was threading needle one day and one of the prongs flat out broke off. Sales people at store of no help and, of course, it must be sent out to be worked on. The computer showed a total of 7.3 hours previous sewing time on it when I got it and I was told the previous owner just decided to upgrade to another machine. Really? Only after 7 hours of sewing time. I think this is just a lemon. Don’t trust anyone else to transport this $10,000 machine, so I guess I will be making a 2hour trip to take it in myself. I believe they made so many changes on this model, they made it so you have to be a rocket scientist to run the machine. Adjustments have to be made for everything – fabric, thread, bobbin thread, etc. Not happy.
I feel your pain. They need to make it right! The Royale edition is a lemon.

Do you know if the Floriana Thread works on this machine?

Floriani will work just fine!
I used Floriani to test out a Brother DreamMachine 2 at the dealer’s and it frayed like crazy. I’ve never seen that happen except using thick metallic tread on my D1 and I’ve done tons of embroidery I use Isacord or Robison Anton and think Floriani is inferior especially if it does this on a $16k machine.
I use OPW Premium Embroidery Thread and it is great. It is a really nice polyester thread in lots of nice colors. It’s available at http://www.oregonpatchworks.com/collections.php?id=OPWS
I kept my ddd when I purchased the Royale. I’m about to receive my third Royale due to many, many problems. Not happy…..
I’ve been there, after my third replacement that broke a needle right out of the gate and had to be taken to repair to adjust and would not sew for more than 5 minutes, without wanting to “rest” I made a decision to return the Viking diamond royale after 18 months and three replacement machines and move on passing onViking all together , i was not wanting that frustration again. I am now the owner of a janome for 6 months now and I have not had one issue!!! Back to enjoying sewing…
Thinking of a janome embroidering machine, what format to they accept?
Has anyone had trouble with the majestic hoop designs not lining up? Multiple projects have been ruined bectyhe design doesn’t line up correctly after turning the hoop. My machine was recently serviced, the problem existed before servicing. The service guy said he had no trouble with design alignment. The local Viking store used my machine with a different arm and stitched out a design that lined up correctly. Is it possible my embroidery arm is malfunctioning? They never take the arm with the machine when they service it
I always take my arm in with the machine…just make sure your name is written on it. I got a Diamond Royale in May of 2019…that Aug had the touch screen replaced…then in for repairs because the icons would not stay calibrated. Then the screen started to flicker and finally blacked out. New LCD screen in Aug of 2020..Though must say..the screen went black I was still able to finish the design as I had it open on my laptop and could follow the thread changes. Sews like a charm….screen just not right…have to recalibrate about every other time..a pain…because some times you can’t get to that page.
I have the designer diamond royale, it sews beautifully, but something is always happening to it. I take it to the dealer, they repair it I sew some and something else happens to it. I haven’t had it two years it has been for repairs three times. I am going to take it in now because it doesn’t recognize my USB stick. Does anyone have this problem? How do we fix it?

I have a Designer Diamond Deluxe. It is in the repair shop now because I kept getting “unexpected firmware error. Please restart the machine” My tech (who is great) has been trying to get help for this problem but nobody seems to know what may be causing it. The first time it happened when just after the last update came out, techs who were supposed to be experts told my tech to re-install the update plus they never heard of such a problem. She did (I also re-installed it numerous times before taking it back again for the same problem) but the problem persisted. Installed a new motherboard but the tension system doesn’t work properly. No help from the company at all despite repeated requests via email.
It’s been a long story so far!
My dealer/tech loaned me the Ruby, nice machine but I would really prefer to have mine back and working properly.
Has anyone else experienced this error (with any of Husqvarna Viking machines)?
Final words (for now). I am thinking about cutting my loses on the DDD but what do I buy as a replacement? Suggestions would be appreciated. There is a small Baby Lock dealer who can only bring in a machine if somebody purchased it (too costly for her to have numerous models in stock). No other dealers for any machine in my town, except a fabric store that carries Bernina but don’t service them (have to send them to a different province for servicing – at my expense).

My Designer Diamond Royale is a lemon. It has been in for touch screen problems. I am on my 4th screen. HV will not stand by their product and has VERY POOR customer service. I am stuck with an expensive lemon.
Bring METAL bobbins back, PLEASE!!
I purchased a Viking Diamond Royale off E-Bay from a reputable dealer. I thought I would not have any issues, since it was described as having very few hours on the sewing as well as the embroidery. It was packaged very well when received; however, the accessory part soon came off. So I took it to the Viking dealer to have repaired and serviced. They repaired the accessory piece that fell off, but did not service the embroidery unit. They did service the machine itself. I got it home and did several projects only for it to have embroidery issues with the arm, So, now back to the shop again, which is about 45 miles away, and hope it will be fixed this time. If the embroidery unit is not fixed, I plan to purchase a new one, which will be expensive, I am sure. I do like the quality of the stitch with the Viking machines. I will not ever purchase a pre-owned machine again.
I’ve had my Designer Diamond Royale since 2015, she’s going on 3 years and not once have I had any major problems with it since I got it. I took it in to be serviced last year, but I had just run over a dozen embroidery projects on top of my insane costume sewing projects for an event and thought it would be a good idea to get it serviced. It came back, still working great. I’ve noticed that it makes a bit of a ‘clunking’ sound whenever I sew or embroider – but nothing is wrong with the stitches or the sewing. It’s just a sound, and sometimes the sound stops and will start up again. But since nothing is really going wrong, I’m keeping a note to add when I take in for service again. I also had problems with my bobbin thread showing up on my top, but an adjustment to the bobbin case tension fixed it right up. I figured this out watching several troubleshooting embroidery videos. Considering I’ve been running embroideries for 2-3 hrs a day for the past week, and they have been coming out fantastic. I can say that I LOVE my Diamond. Sure there are a few bumps, and a learning curve (I jumped from a Singer Emperial to the Designer Diamond Royale), but overall she is a workhorse and a trouper. As for thread, I was told by my dealer to use 100% only, of either cotton or polyester, but it has to be 100% and not coated. I use a lot of Gutterman, Maderia, Sulky, Mettler, and Floriani threads, and don’t have too many issues with them. Or at least that I’ve noticed.
My Diamond Royals is clearly a lemon of a machine. I have it in the shop so many times. They have replaced the tension unit, power supple and just replaced the mother board in November. Sewing worse now than it ever has. Broke 3 needle on Sat. Tried again Sun broke another needle. Needs to go back to shop. I just don’t want to put anymore money in it. All the parts where under warrant but I had to pay labor cost. I really don’t know what to do at this point. Wondering if there is any kind of legal action that can be taken for Viking to replace it.
