Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 Review (2023 Update)
Note from the Editor: This Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 review was originally written in 2013, and has been revised and updated in 2023. This model is a limited edition release and is no longer in production. We have added alternatives such as Brother SE1900, Janome 4120QDC, and Elna Elnita ec60.
The Project Runway phenomenon continues to amaze fashion sewing enthusiasts and the Project Runway line at Brother continues to grow. When I had the opportunity to review the Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 at Laura’s Sewing and Vacuum in Palm Beach Gardens, the experience was very interesting.
Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 Overview
The Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 is a computerized sewing machine designed for sewers of all levels, from beginners to advanced users. It features a large backlit LCD display that displays stitch patterns, and also shows recommended presser foot and stitch length and width settings. The machine has 70 built-in stitches, including utility, decorative, and quilting stitches, and also comes with seven built-in one-step buttonhole styles. The Innov-is 40 has an advanced needle threading system that automatically threads the needle with the touch of a lever, and also features a drop-in bobbin system that is easy to thread and monitor. It has a wide table for larger projects and a built-in speed control for precision sewing. The Innov-is 40 comes with a range of accessories, including several presser feet, a seam ripper, and a needle set, and also includes a built-in free arm for sewing cuffs and sleeves. The machine has a sleek and modern design, and is built to last with a sturdy construction. Overall, the Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 is a great machine for both basic and advanced sewing projects, and is especially ideal for those interested in fashion design
This model is now discontinued. We recommend trying out alternatives that we have added to this post.
To look at it, you might be tempted to think that the Project Runway Innov-is 40 would be capable of doing all that it can actually do. The pink accent color and child friendly stitch selector dial can really be deceiving.
In addition, there is a backlit monochromatic LCD screen, an automatic needle threader, easy to reach function buttons, easy to follow threading guides, seam guides etched onto the needle plate and a see through bobbin cover.
What are some alternatives for Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40?
We have already mentioned in this review that the Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 is a limited edition model and is no longer in production. Here are some alternatives we recommend instead.
The Brother Embroidery Machine, SE1900 is a computerized embroidery machine that is perfect for beginners and hobbyists. It has 138 built-in embroidery designs, including a variety of designs for monogramming, home décor, and clothing. It also has 11 built-in fonts and a 5" x 7" embroidery field.
The SE1900 also has a number of features that make it easy to use, such as the touch-screen display and the automatic needle threader. It also has a number of advanced features, such as the My Custom Stitch™ feature, which allows you to create your own custom stitches.
The SE1900 is a great choice for beginners and hobbyists who are looking for an embroidery machine with a variety of features and a great stitch quality. It is not the most affordable machine on the market, but it is a good value for the price.
A flexible and easy-to-use computerized sewing machine, the Elna Elnita ec60 offers a number of functions for both beginner and experienced sewers. This machine can handle a variety of chores, from straightforward repairs to more challenging sewing tasks, thanks to its 60 built-in stitches, which include basic, decorative, and stretch stitches.
The Elna Elnita ec60's user-friendly LCD screen, which makes it simple to choose and modify stitches, stitch length, and stitch width, is one of its noteworthy characteristics. Additionally, the machine has an automatic needle threader that makes threading the needle simple and does not require hand threading.
This sewing machine's constant and accurate stitching is another advantage. Each stitch is even and accurate thanks to the machine's sophisticated features, which include a drop-in bobbin system that prevents jams, automated tension adjustment, and an adjustable speed control.
The Elna Elnita ec60 is light-weight and transportable, making it convenient to use for extended periods of time. The machine also includes a foot control, which makes it simple to manage the sewing machine's speed while allowing your hands to be free to control the cloth.

Working on the Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40
Threading the Project Runway Innov-is 40 and winding the bobbin are child’s play. The stitch selection process is equally easy.
With each turn of the dial, a number appears on the LCD screen that corresponds with a stitch design on the front panel. in addition to the stitch number, the default stitch length and width settings appear as well.
To adjust the stitch length or width, simply use the toggle switches on the right side of the screen.
How easy can that be? A simple turn of the dial, a touch of the stitch length and/or width adjustment switches and your stitch is ready to be sewn.
The quality of the stitches produced by the Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 is surprisingly superior to that of nearly every other machine in this class.
For this review, I sampled several different stitch options and was impressed by them all. The stitches are well formed, secure and well defined. There is a little vibration when sewing at the very highest speed.
However, when sewing at the middle or lower speeds, the Project Runway Innov-is 40 is whisper quiet and there’s no vibration whatsoever.

Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 Summary
The Brother Project Runway Limited Edition Innov-is 40 is a surprisingly user friendly, highly functional sewing machine. I like the ideal of dialing up a stitch number; and the stitch quality is absolutely wonderful.
While this machine may not have some of the features available on other sewing machines in its price range, it has all of the necessary features plus one very important feature that many of its competitors lack. You can use this one to teach children the art of sewing. This machine is so user friendly, I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it for use by a child in elementary school. Its simplicity and user friendliness should not a deterrent to anyone with years and years of sewing experience who might be considering buying a Project Runway Innov-is 40.
The stitch quality, overall quiet operation and lack of vibration at the lower sewing speeds are major factors that every home sewer can appreciate. It doesn’t have a lot of stitch options, but the stitches it offers are excellent.
If you can be satisfied with 40 utility and decorative stitches – with five one step buttonholes included – then this just might be the machine for you. You owe it to yourself to at least check it out before making a final decision to purchase a new addition for your sewing room.

Happy Stitching.
I have the Project Runway Brother limited edition invo 40 very dissappointed with this machine for the price I paid. Wish I had never sold my singer! This machine is down more than it sews. Tension is always screwing up. I am a very experienced sewer, I also own the Babylock BNT10L . I sew and embroider wedding dress and Ball gowns. Baby clothes, quilts etc. I own over 15 sewing machines.
I have a crank machine and a treadle sewing Machine. I know sewing machine! Thought this one might be a good compliment for my embroidery machine. I have been very dissappointed with this machine.
I have only used this machine for 30 minutes and a little disappointed. Tension is screwing up; as well as having to redo the bobbin after 15 minutes of slow sewing!
I’m frustrated! I’ve been reading your excellent, positive reviews of machines I’m considering and then I see the negative reviews of customers. Makes it difficult to trust buying ANY sewing machine.
I love my Innovis 40! I’ve had it for 5 years and never had a problem. It’s my go to machine for travel and quilt guild meetings.
I have been sewing over 50 years. Using this machine has been so frustrating. The challenge has been the amount of time I have spent rewinding bobbins, rethreading, only to have fabric and thread knotted up, cutting in out and starting all over again. If all goes well and I am back to sewing and run out of bobbin thread, the whole process starts again with poor stitches. And this is on the same fabric and same thread. Just read the manual, every direction is followed by do this correctly or major damage will result. Often times, I go back to using my Neechi made in 1950, thread it, and sew with no issues. So sorry the sales person talked me into buying this machine that is unusable.
Where do I go to find parts, specifically needle plate and bobbin casing? I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find that information. Phone number, address, website.
We have been using the NS 40 in our classes for years. We teach ages 8 and up and they torture these machines. The machines have held up really well and have needed very little service. The only time there is a problem is when one of the students don’t thread it correctly.
I’ve had this machine for over a year and hate it! The tension is always out of whack and sometimes impossible to get a good bottom stitch (of course that shows up really bad when hemming jeans, etc.) Also have to rethread bobbin a lot as it sometime knots up or pulls out completely. I’ve been sewing over 40 years and never had a machine this bad. Dealer told me to use their “better” thread. Bought it and hasn’t changed the stitches a bit! Give me back my Viking.
