One very busy morning, Lisa and the staff of Once Upon a Quilt were gracious enough to take time from their hectic schedules to introduce us to Bernina’s newest embroidery machine.
The Bernina 580, which we have reviewed here today, was released late in the summer of 2011 along with the 530 and 550.
Bernina 580 Overview

Well, now I know I have a real lemon in my 580. Purchased it in February; began to use it in a month later; been in the shop for various parts to be replaced and adjustments several times. Spent WAY TOO MUCH MONEY ON THIS MACHINE TO BE HAVING ALL THESE PROBLEMS. Currently the embroidery machine is in the shop (for almost 3 weeks now) Very frustrated. If I had it to do over again, I would NOT purchase a Bernina. Ready to dump this lemon.
Keep in mind that any repair is only as good as the person who is working on your machine. Rather than blame a high quality machine like this, I would take a long hard look at the person who is doing possibly a unneeded repair or has no idea what he/she is doing. Just because someone has paid a fee and taken a class does not mean you are now instantly mechanically inclined.
Many supposed technicians are basically, what I call “parts replaces”. In short that is saying that they are not sure what the problem might be so they just keep replacing parts till they get it right.
I service Berninas and I have nothing but good things to say about the 580. I do not know of any “bugs” with this model as it is a proven mechanical design. AKA Bernina640, with many improvements!
I have a been a Bernina tech for over 22 years and i must say that the Bernina 580E is one of the best made machines ever built, the tech is what makes or breaks a bond with a owner and their machine.
I have had an intermittent problem from the start. The needle position changes of its own accord. The needle does not return to the central position. Therefore I cannot use the zipper foot as the needle will not go far enough to the right. My machine has been back several times for “repair” and I have always been blamed for its faults! Very frustrating and a costly machine such as this should surely be fault free.
These are not good machines and have a terrible problem with thread breakage. I do not recommend any Bernina product ever, anything but Bernina pretty much.
I have had similar problems. It goes out if warranty and it spends more time in repair than in my sewing studio. I think we should do a class action lawsuit, bc we all have similar problems. I thought they stood by their machine; but once out I’d warranty, there is no benevolence; repair costs skyrocket and machine still not repaired! For the money I spent, there is no satisfaction. They know that these 580’s have problems and they have swept it under the rug. Advice: not even with the new 590, DO NOT BUY! You will be sorry. My friend bought the 590. Had to turn it in and say keep it. I don’t want it anymore… tooo many problems!

I bought the Bernina 580 last year. I don’t find it particularly user friendly but am slowly getting to know it and it stitches beautifully. I have found it intermittently makes a knocking sound when embroidering with the hoop, the stitching is fine. Has anyone else had this experience or have any ideas about the cause of the knocking?
I too have experienced the knocking sound when embroidering, although it continued to stitch beautifully. I took it back to the shop and had them listen to it in action and it seems this is just the way it is and there is nothing wrong with the machine. I have found when I hold the hoop firmly against the machine table as it is embroidering the knocking sounds become a little less. I also wonder if it is affected by the type of fabric or stabilizer use in the hoop? Any other ideas let me know. Apart from this, I love this machine.
I purchased my Bernina 580 in February of 2014 and it has been in the shop 3 times now and is currently there. The sensor doesn’t work and every so often, the needle will come down directly on the presser foot. Bam, needle is broken and the needle alignment is off and cannot be changed. The last time this happened, it also started breaking the needle when the
‘scissors’ were used. I am frustrated to say the least. I also think I have a lemon. I would really like for them to exchange mine and send the old one back to the company. My question is “Is it possible that I am causing these problems”, because the shop where I bought it says 99% of the problems with these machine are the user.
I think I have a lemon too! Mine has spent more time not working and being repaired than I have had it to use…. I spent way too much money for this drama!
I have picked it up today from its latest trip to Bernina Australia for a replacement part…Mine kept giving a message about the shaft not being synchronised….anyway it has now come back without a bobbin case! I live 3 1/2 hours from Sydney… I am frustrated,annoyed and very sad 🙁 I would not recommend Bernina to anyone!
Has anyone read the first page inside the instruction manual from Mr Bernina? It talks about the quality product you have purchased and how customer satisfaction is very important to the company…lol
ive been looking for a combo sewing-embroidery machine for a few months now and Ive heard so much about Berninas so I stop by a local store to look closely at the 580 because it was on ‘sale’. Based on the costs, even at the ‘sales’ price, I was not impressed. Some things I didnt like are 1) at high sewing speed it sewed like their cheaper low-end machines it vibrated terribly it was starting to move across the table. 2) no drop-in bobbin, 3) the screen was not very color vibrant for the money, 4) it only comes with about 4 feet and the embroidery foot is not one that is included with the 4 that come with the machine, 5) the average costs for each foot is $45. I thought it had a cheap feel to it and not worth the money when there are other brands who have more features and user friendly as this claims to be.
Is this machine really not for such a long list of fabrics? I bought one yesterday and I forgot to ask how it handles silk. It will not be delivered for a couple of days, and I am now feeling a bit anxious about having made a mistake.
I have a lemon too. I purchased my machine two years and it has been in for service more than in use. When I brought it home, first thing, bobbin sensor shows there is no thread and the machine stops running. It’s very annoying to stitch a monogram when your machine stops very few seconds, say 20 to 30 times. This is no exaggeration! It’s been in the repair shop three or four times and comes back each time with the same problem. I finally turned off the bobbin sensor. Next problem after finally being able to use my machine, while trying to stitch a monogram, it broke 3 needles and said on the screen to take in for service. It was in the repair shop for over four weeks. This machine has hardly had any use, surprised so much trouble with a new machine. I thought I had a lemon within the first 30 days but dealer would not recognize. Bernina does not replace machines, that’s what I was told. Another problem is that it’s very sensitive with threading. If it’s not threaded perfect, it will not embroidery. When I change colors during a monogram, I have to retread it about five times before I get it perfect in order to start embroidering again. If I could get rid of this machine and not loose all my money, it would have been gone. Wish I had been better informed before buying this machine.
I hate my B580. It was sent back to the factory in 6 weeks after purchasing. It has been in the shop three times since then. The factory said they had repaired it but the local tech had to work on it after it back to me. Now the feed dogs will not go up to move the fabric.
Too much money for an inferior product.
I’d like to thank all of you for your comments and sharing your personal experiences with the Bernina 580. As I have said on numerous occasions, almost every machine works perfectly right out of the box. As I do reviews, I make every possible attempt to look for any and all flaws that may exist. Obviously, with the 580, some people are experiencing problems with the sensor bobbin. My recommendation is to not give up on your investment until you have exhausted every possible option. If you are really fed up with it and ready to give it a new home, try selling it on ebay and use the money from that sale to get a replacement. Unfortunately, with brand new machines that don’t have long track records, we sometimes get lemons. Several years ago, I got one as well. The machine in question worked wonderfully for the first year or so, but when the problems started, they didn’t end. Eventually I sold it at a yard sale. I cannot seem to find out whether the Adapter Kit that enable fee arm embroidery is suitable for this machine. Is it possible?
So far, I have found that this machine does everything I ask of it, and beautifully. Please do edit the list of materials that it will deal with, as you are quite wrong about its not managing natural fibres, fine fabrics, knits and synthetic fabrics. This is rather misleading.
I have had my 580 for 9 months now and I love it. Mine has given me no problems, sews like a dream, beautiful embroidery and applique. I quilt and it handles the thickness of the material with no problem. I did take lessons at the Bernina store where I bought my machine so perhaps that is why I have not had any problems. I would highly recommend this machine.

We bought out Bernina B580E three months ago the beginning of September 2014. It has worked flawlessly until yesterday, 3rd Dec, when it broke a needle as it was about 3mm off centre of the embroidery foot and since then the machine has been unusable, the screen has lost its settings so you cannot touch the right icon, as one an inch or two is activated. So it has to go back to Bernina in Cardiff for repair. £3000 of rubbish.
Nice review.I have this machine, for 6 mos now. I have had no problems with it. Your list of fabrics is not correct. This will sew knits, synthetics, vinyl, and even light leather. You need the roller foot or Teflon foot, and leather or denim needle, but it doesn’t even hiccup sewing them. The bobbin sensor is annoying, they will fix that in the next software update. They fixed the thread cutter cutting too short in the current update. Quiet, steady, workhorse. Embroiders beautifully, but I have to increase the bobbin tension, even using the embroidery bobbin with the pigtail. I do recommend that anyone buying bernina, open the box at the dealership, and stitch every utility stitch right there before taking home. And try a twin needle. If you find flaws, ask for new machine. Bernina will replace if you do this. But take it home and do that, and it will be up to the dealer if it gets replaced.
I’ve had my machine for over two years, and it’s been great! My only problem has been the bobbin thread indicator -something which I turned off because I don’t need it. I’m very pleased with my 580 and plan to keep it forever.
Techs are like auto mechanics. Sometimes they don’t really know what they’re doing and try to give the user a snow job. If I had a problem, I’d insist that the tech 1) write down the problem and 2) write down what I should be doing. If he refuses or if I can find nothing on the Internet to support what he says, I’d contact Bernina to inform them of the machine problem, the name of the dealer, and the name of the tech.
I have had my Bernina 580 for two years and love it. She sews beautifully and has all the functions that I need. I have not used the embroidery feature much because I use my Bernina 880 for that but when I have used it, I have been happy with the results. I am sorry for those of you who have had problems. There is nothing more frustrating than paying top dollar for a machine of this calibre only to be frustrated. I purchased my machine at Hinkletown and when I have any problems I can call them from 8 AM until 8 PM and they are so helpful and supportive. They never want their customers to be frustrated and are happy to help and extremely knowledgeable. Just today I took my 880 in for her annual service and shared a perceived problem only to find that I was doing something wrong. I will be spending a week at a hotel this week while my hubby is at a conference. We’re driving so have my 580 with me along with half of my sewing room. LOL. I will be using it for embroidery and will add comments if anything helpful comes up or if I have any problems.
How do I turn on the LED light on my Bernina 580 machine.?

I’ve got a lemon 580 so disappointed in this machine. I’ve had it for 4 weeks and not completed anything . When ever I sew it leave large loops on the underside. I’ve changed the thread, I’ve re threaded , I took bobbin out and put it back in. Dealer says 99% times its the user they just took the machine in they got hoops too. I was then told machine doesn’t like the fabric I’m using and I need to play around with the threads to see which one it likes. So basically before I sew I need to see if what thread it likes today and if the thread goes with the fabric I’m going to use. This is my first and last Bernina, I wouldn’t recommend this machine to any one.
I purchases my Bernina 580E on 12/31/16. I too am having the same problem with with my 580, thread looping on the underside and bobbin sensor problems. I’ve been back to my Bernina dealer too many times. I’ve had the same problems as others have had with the bobbin sensor going off after exactly 32 stitches. They finally replaced the bobbin sensor. That seems to be fixed but, the looping problem is still there. I asked my dealer for a copy of all the service done on my 8 month old machine. She provided me with most of the documentation along with a letter stating the difficulties I’m having were my fault. Operator error. The looping and bobbin sensor problems happened in my presence while her staff were operating the machine. This machine IS a very expensive lemon. I DO NOT recommend a Bernina to anyone. It’s very expensive and according to what I’m reading from others, not reliable. Buyer beware!!!
To create free-motion machine embroidery, the embroiderer runs the machine and skillfully moves tightly hooped fabric under the needle to create a design. The operator lowers or covers the “feed dogs” or machine teeth and moves the fabric manually. Thanks for sharing…
I have just purchased a 380, looking to purchase a 580 within the next year or so. But, after reading some of the reviews here. I am very hesitant. I will continue to do my research……any words of advice anyone???? Would be much appreciated.
I bought the 580 five years ago -had nothing but trouble with it. Bobbin sensor never worked. Stitch quality -very poor. The machine spent 7 out of first 12 months in repair shops, everything seemed wrong with it -even the display panel broke down and had to be replaced. NOT recommended. The Embroidery quality is really very poor; and the speed never ever reaches 600-the official reviews are simply misleading.
There are a lot of fabrics this machine will not sew correctly. It was repaired in Cardiff ; berninas headquarters for Britain, and the sensors still not work. The bobbin is very difficult to change (too deep a recess if your fingers are not tiny). Not a machine to recommend to any one. Unhappy owner from Wales UK
Get a Pfaff machine!
I read great reviews of this machine so bought one and I am extremely disappointed. I can not sew with it as the bobbin alarm constantly goes off stopping the machine and raising the needle. I have gotten no help from the dealer or Bernina. Right now very angry about my purchase. Big waste of money.
I too have a Bernina B580 and have had nothing but problems. The bobbin sensor continues not be a problem. The machine has been at the Bernina dealer almost as much as it has been at my house. It is still under warranty but apparently Bernina does not recognize a lemon. My main problem is when I turn on my machine, many times I have to update the software. The software program is wiped out when I turn off the machine. Since July of 2017 I have had to update the software from a USB stick at least 18 times to continue to embroider. Of course, with every update the memory is wiped out and the calibrations are also gone.
For an expensive machine, I expect much more and I am tired of taking my machine in only to feel as if they look at me as a total idiot. One time they used canned air and sent the machine home again. The problem just has never been solved and I am totally frustrated.
I have a Lemon it has never worked properly from day one has been back to the shop for repair several times i have given up using it . when I start to sew for a few stitches it stops sign comes to say spool is empty I have to press clear it is so frustrating I do not use the machine I have got two other Bernina which I love old 830 and 1230 bernina I just wish I I could use it nice smooth sewing machine .
Can any body please help with some advice
