Bernina 550 QE Review (2023 Update)
Note from the Editor: This review was originally written in 2012 and has been revised and updated in 2023. We have added alternative home quilting machines such as JUKI TL-2000Qi, Brother XR3774, and Juki HZL-F400.
The Bernina 550 QE, which we have reviewed today, is a newly launched embroidery machine. The 530 is the BERNINA’s latest addition to their line of multi-function machines; and the 550 QE is the newest BERNINA home quilting machine. The ‘QE’ stands for Quilters’ Edition.
Bernina 550 QE Overview
The Bernina 550 QE is a high-quality sewing and quilting machine that is designed for both beginners and experienced sewers alike. It is packed with a wide range of features that make it a versatile machine that can handle a variety of sewing tasks with ease. It comes with a large, easy-to-use touchscreen display via which you can easily select the stitch you want, adjust the length and width of the stitch, and control the speed of the machine. The machine also has a built-in memory function that can store up to 100 stitch combinations for easy recall. The machine has a variety of sewing and quilting functions, including 177 stitch patterns, 5 alphabets, and an automatic buttonhole function. The machine also has a unique Bernina stitch regulator that ensures even stitch lengths and speeds when free-motion quilting.
The Bernina 550 QE features an advanced needle threader, which makes threading the needle quick and easy. The machine also has a powerful motor that can sew at up to 900 stitches per minute, allowing you to complete your sewing projects quickly and efficiently. It has a large work surface and an ergonomic design that reduces strain on your hands and wrists during extended sewing sessions. The machine also has a bright LED light that illuminates the work area, making it easy to see your sewing project even in low-light conditions.
When you first look at them, the 530 and 550 QE appear to be identical in every way. Upon closer examination of the presser foot, however, you will clearly see that the BERNINA 550 QE is equipped with the exclusive BERNINA Stitch Regulator (BSR).
The BSR is a specialized presser foot that assures the user that quilting stitches remain even and consistent while executing freehand stitches or working with thick layers of fabric.
While the stitch regulator is an optional accessory which can be added to any BERNINA sewing, quilting or embroidery machine, it comes as a standard feature on the BERNINA 550 QE.
What are the features on Bernina 550 QE?
Many of the other features available on the BERNINA 550 QE are also found on the 530. They include:
- Capability to sew up to 900 stitches per minute

Working on the Bernina 550 Quilters’ Edition
The on board threading guide and top winding bobbin are just the first user friendly steps in a wonderful sewing experience. The touch pad helps guide users through each step in creating the perfect sewing and quilting projects.
The addition of the standard BERNINA Stitch Regulator, the front loading bobbin and the free hand sewing system make working on the BERNINA 550 QE one of the most pleasant sewing experiences possible. The freehand sewing system, coupled with the BSR makes quilting a breeze.
No matter how many fabric layers we use, the BERNINA 550 QE makes quilting so easy, even a novice can execute a multitude of beautiful quilt projects.
The spacious extension table has a convenient window that allows users to change the bobbin without removing it and when it is not in use, a functional free arm is exposed, facilitating easy access to sleeve hems, cuffs and other small sewing tasks.
The on board rulers on the base of the BERNINA 550 QE and the extension table coupled with the seam guide etched onto the needle plate are features that any sewer would appreciate.
These seemingly insignificant add-ons are extremely valuable time savers.
The BERNINA 550 QE is capable of rendering up to 900 stitches per minute. While it is running, users will notice how smoothly and quietly it operates, and the ergonomic design makes it possible for users to sew or long hours with fewer rest stops.
That’s because the BERNINA 550 QE is specifically designed to minimize fatigue as well as shoulder, neck and wrist discomfort.
What are some alternatives for Bernina 550 QE?
We have reviewed several quilting machines similar to the Bernina 550 QE and here are some alternatives we recommend.
Juki’s TL-2000Qi is a workhorse with an intimidating stitching speed, but it will not quite intimidate you because it is fairly easy to work with. If weight is an issue for you, it is a true industrial machine that weighs a lot. to counter that is extremely substantial. The device responds super quickly and gives you a rather smooth experience at the worktable. To save you time and tension while threading the needle, there is an automated threader. It's true that it takes a few attempts before you feel confident threading the needle. When working on large sewing or quilting tasks, the machine's working surface, which measures around 23 inches, is ideal. With the machine purchase, a flat-bed extension table is supplied to expand your workspace.
In order to hang on to the fabric and concentrate on the project you're working on, there is a knee lever that enables you to elevate or lower your presser foot without using your hands. For skilled and experienced sewers, this is useful. Since it is industrial in character and heavy-duty, this machine is ideal for professional sewers. It should last you for many years.
If you have just stepped into sewing or are at an intermediate stage, then Brother XR3774 Sewing Machine is your call. The resource can spread sheer joy by offering 37 built-in stitches, a wide table for quilting, and an automatic needle threader. One of the best parts is that the machine is very light and its intuitive pattern makes it perfect for anyone, who does sewing as a hobby and wants a reliable machine to serve the purpose.
- User-friendly controls and a drop-in bobbin system to prevent jams.
- Affordable even with the important features.
- Lightweight and small in size, ideal for resuming sewing on the go or in limited space.
- Built-in with 37 stitches, may hinder professional users.
- The speed slider cannot be adjusted, making it a hindrance to achieving precision in complicated projects.
The Juki HZL-F400 is an advanced, computerized sewing machine that is perfect for intermediate and experienced sewers. It has 230 built-in stitches, including a variety of straight stitches, zigzag stitches, and decorative stitches. It also has a 1-step buttonhole function, a needle threader, and an automatic thread cutter. The machine is easy to use and operate, with a large, easy-to-read LCD display and a simple control panel. The HZL-F400 is also lightweight and portable, making it easy to take with you to sewing classes or workshops.

Bernina 550 QE Summary
The BERNINA 550 QE is one of three brand new machines by BERNINA. While this particular model is specifically designed to handle all sewing tasks, the BERNINA Stitch Regulator makes it an ideal choice for the home sewer who is partial to machine embroidery.
The exclusive Bernina freehand system is a perfect accompaniment for the machine quilter. All it takes to execute the perfect freehand quilting designs is a gentle guiding touch by the user. The LCD screen and on board navigational buttons help even the beginner achieve perfect results each and every time. The price tag does make Bernina 550 QE out of a lot of people’s budget. To conclude my review, the Bernina 550 QE is the most affordable quilting and sewing machine for the home sewer, and a welcome addition to any sewing room that produces any machine quilting pieces, even if the quilting specialty happens to be quilted accents on jacket fronts, collars, pockets and yokes.

Happy Stitching.
Machine sounds wonderful but need an explanation of the blue X’s and red check marks.
Yeah im confused too
Me too. Do the x’s mean those fabrics shouldn’t be used on this machine?
Only con I see is I wish some way it could tell me how much thread is left on the bobbin??? That would be so HANDY!!! Luv,luv my 550……other wise it is absoultely the BEST EVER!!
Need HELP on my free/hand machine Embroidery Please!
Tell me how to set my top deal number? So that the white bobbin thread does not come to the top of my embroidery stitches??? ThankYou, zerlene
To adjust bobbin tension, The bobbin case has a little screw on it, just next to the tension notch. Righty tightly, lefty loosy. But a tiny 1/8″ turn goes a long way. I recommend getting a second bobbin case to adjust, and leave the original one for sewing. Bobbin work, embroidery, etc, on the second. If using bobbin thread, which is smaller, turn the screw tiny amount, then while holding the case in one hand, give the thread a slight tug. A small amount of thread should dispense, a tad less than 1/4″.
Do the feet from older machines for example Bernina 1230 fit the Bernina 550 QE?
Hello, Margaret –
Thank you for visiting Sewing Insight.
Many of the older Bernina presser feet fit the newer models. However, to be certain that everything works smoothly, I suggest you give your local Bernina dealer a call. Better yet, drop by and introduce yourself. No doubt the sales staff will be glad to assist you with any questions you may have.
Happy stitching.
Is the only difference between the 530 and 550 qe the accessory package
Connie, the 550 QE has a few more stitches, but not many, and the BSR comes standard. It is an add on for the 530.
Does the 440 feet fit the 550…also does this use a USB stick to do embroidery?
Hello, Arlene
Thank you for visiting Sewing Insight.
To the best of my knowledge, nearly all Bernina presser feet are interchangeable. However, I caution you to verify this information with your local Bernina dealer before making a purchase.
As a rule, quilting machines are not equipped with USB ports. This feature is usually reserved for embroidery machines when downloadable designs and software are more common.
Where is the auto thread cutter? It looks like it barely has any LED lights for that price. I also noticed there is no bobbin low sensor. There is also no touch screen and the display is not in colour for that price it seems you are getting short changed compared to other brands. No dual feed and a maximum stitch width of only 5.5 am I missing something here? How did this get 5* ??
Do you need a color screen to tell you the stitch length and width, the foot to use, or a digital example of the stitch? When you see the precision of each stitch on this well lit 12 led light machine….it rivals all machines costing 3 to 4 times more. There are many thread cutters on this machine. The cb hook system and the precise and small free arm which I have seen baby and doll clothes on are worth not having a thread cutter. I suspect that pitting an auto cutter in this machine would require making the free arm larger. It is perfect!! Long live the cb hook!
“With a price tag of $4399, the BERNINA 550 QE is within easy reach of just about any budget.” Really? Within easy reach of just about any budget? I don’t think so; the person who reviewed this does not live in the real world!
